Although GameBoy Advance is an old handheld console, that isn’t stopping Toy and Television Games from making GBA mods. Folks from Toy and Television Games have just released their latest product called Nintendo Game Boy GBA SP Arcade Tabletop that combines the power of GameBoy Advance, arcade controls with 4 buttons and arcade joystick, Acacia wood and American steel dock. Despite its unusual look and feel, we can’t shake the feeling that this mod looks bit bulky to us compared to the standard GameBoy Advance SP. Also, we have to mention that it takes about 300 hours to make a single Nintendo Game Boy GBA SP Arcade Tabletop.

This casemod is interesting, but it also comes with a hefty price of $399, so we’re not so sure as to how many customers will be tempted its way.

Samsung wants to ban Apple product sales in the US

Samsung Electronics recently filed a complaint with the US International Trade Commission (ITC) as they seek a ban on the sale of key Apple products in the US. In a nutshell, the South Korean consumer electronics giant intends to prevent the iPhone, iPad and iPod models from being imported and sold in the the US.
Sounds rather outlandish, and we do think that this filing will not go through or get approved – after all, to think that there will be no more iPads or iPhones in the US is just unimaginable. To date, both companies have no love lost between them, as they have accused one another of copying designs and technology.
Samsung’s statement mentioned that “Samsung will vigorously defend our intellectual property to protect our role as a leader and innovator in the mobile communication business in order to better serve our customers.”

Analysts think that the legal wrangling was an unnecessary headache for both firms, as they are dependent on each other in some ways. Samsung is the one who provides microchips for Apple’s products, while Cupertino is also a key client for the Korean manufacturer, having settled for business worth around $5.7 billion in 2010 alone between them.

Apple’s iPad Helps A 9 Year Old Girl With Eyesight Problems

Melbourne schoolgirl Holly Bligh, aged 9, has albinism which is a genetic condition that affects not only the pigment in her skin, hair and eyes, but also her vision. Normally for Holly to read, she would require a hefty magnifying glass, and work sheets given out by her teachers would have to be magnified when photocopied specially for her. Well now thanks to the iPad, it seems that most of her reading problems have been solved, as all she would have to do is swipe and pinch to flip through pages and to enlarge text. Her attention span reportedly has also increased and her “visual fatigue” now apparently takes twice as long before it sets in.
Just to point it out, this could have easily be achieved on an Android tablet, or any other tablet too for that matter, it just so happens that Holly and her parents decided to go for Apple’s iPad instead.

Apparently Holly’s mother was so grateful for what the iPad has done for her daughter, that she sent an email to Steve Jobs, thanking him for “completely changing” her daughter’s life. She was not expecting a reply, but he did. We guess it’s kind of Steve Jobs’ M.O. to surprise. He replied her email saying, “Thanks for sharing your experience with me. Do you mind if I read your email to a group of our top 100 leaders at Apple?” He then proceeded to sign off with “Thanks, Steve” and asked for a photo of Holly with her iPad. We guess this is probably a use of the iPad that maybe Steve Jobs did not foresee.

Research has also shown that school students with a range of physical and mental challenges, including autism and deaf-blindness, show an average of 20 percent improvement in communication abilities from using devices like the iPad.

Mac OS X Lion: now Golden Master status

Apple has been reported to have started seeding the Golden Master version of the operating system to its developers today. The Golden Master version of an app, in case you didn’t know, is pretty much the version of the app that will be shipped out to the general public, assuming no more bugs are found during this phase of testing. If you’re excited about getting your hands on the next version of the Mac OS X operating system, Lion, you’ll be glad to know that it’s not too far away.

If all goes well, Mac users will get to user OS X Lion on their computers soon enough. The speculated release date for OS X Lion has been said to be on July 14th – barely two weeks away from today. Mac users should get ready for the big day and prepare to receive the update. (It would be a good time to start backing up all your files now so you don’t have to do it on the day itself – you never know what could go wrong during the update).

New York Times now offers in-app subscriptions for the iPad

The New York Times was issued a warning by the Cupertino company to include in-app subscriptions on its iOS app by June 30th or face removal. While it seems like the newspaper was going to stay defiant until the end, it looks like they were given a one day extension which they used to enable in-app purchasing through its iPad newspaper.

With such a large newspaper bowing to Apple’s iron fist, it looks like we’re going to see a lot more other apps succumb to the App Store policies instead of standing firm and denying Apple of their presence on its mobile platform. But seeing how most tablet owners own iPads, it would be a bad move to not put their publications on iOS anyway.

Samsung NC215S solar-powered laptop

The battery of gadgets and notebooks alike have always been the achilles heel of all portable devices. But that will not be the case from now onwards, hopefully. Samsung has rolled out its solar-powered netbook, NC215S in the US. The solar powered device, available in the US from July 3 with a suggested retail price of $399 packs a 10.1-inch matte display with a resolution of 1024×600 pixels. Moreover, it has 1GB of RAM and a 1.66 GHz Intel Atom N570 dual-core processor.
Though not the most impressive spec, but according to Samsung, you should be able to get an hour of battery life for every two hours of charging time via its solar panel. Under ideal conditions, Samsung says, you should also be able to squeeze about 14 hours of battery life out of the netbook. But it is obvious that it will provide much shorter battery life for say when under cloudy or rainy conditions as it runs on solar energy.Lets see how the NC215S gets on once it arrives the netbook market.

MSI releases new concept designs

MSI of Taiwan has rolled out a trio of new concepts at the recently concluded CES at Vegas (with a few million square feet of floor space to cover, it can be quite a challenge to check out everything in sight!), where these concepts are touted to help consumers interact with digital information in their homes in a totally new way. We will be taking a look at all three, which are the 3D All-in-One PC, the Sliding Screen All-in-One PC with LED Technology and the Projector PC in the extended post. You should have seen it coming from a mile away with the 3D PC, as everything else has gone 3D this year, it seems.
First of all, the 3D All-in-One PC. This machine is the first 3D All-in-One PC in the world just in case you were wondering whether other computer manufacturers have taken up the task to roll out something equivalent. You will need to wear a pair of wireless 3D glasses while using it though, in order to experience life-like gaming and a 3D HD movie experience right in your home over the machine’s 24″ display. I wonder whether typing out Word documents in 3D makes the mundane office life more interesting.
As for the Sliding Screen All-in-One PC with LED Technology, this concept was inspired by the jellyfish, where the display slides upwards to reveal a hidden keyboard – pretty much like how a standard slider phone works. Of course, in this form factor, you won’t be able to get a thin form factor as it has to be thicker than normal, but on the other hand you do save in terms of desktop space. Apart from that, the second concept comes with a wireless that can be used like a remote control as well an IP-phone.
Last but not least, the Projector PC. This model merges the brilliance of a projector alongside the versatility of a PC, where you get an integrated HD-quality projector that allows you to use it virtually anywhere in the home – as long as there is a decent wall to function as a screen. You are also able to rotate it 90 degrees so that your ceiling doubles up as an alternative movie experience. No idea on when such concepts will ever make it to the market, but they are pretty interesting to look at, that’s for sure.

If you’re going to keep a small USB lamp next to your computer, then it might as well be a computer-themed lamp. This Esc key does exactly that. It plugs into your computer and offers a little subtle lighting to help you see while you’re working in dim conditions. Although it won’t point light directly at any paperwork, it’ll at least add to the lighting you already have.
The Esc key works by just pressing down on the key to turn it off or on. It’s pretty basic stuff. Then to keep it powered, you just plug it into your USB port on your computer. As you might have guessed it uses an LED light to make it slightly more energy efficient. It measures 150 by 130 by 75 millimeters, so it is a decent size. I-FAIRY Robot at CES 2010

There were a lot of robots on parade at CES this year, and this one was the I-FAIRY from Kokoro Co.
According to my source, this robot can be “programmed with the user’s voice and accompanying body gestures that give the I-FAIRY a more natural feel when used for museum guide work”. I have an attached video after the jump that shows it doing nothing of the sort, but rather sitting in one place and occasionally moving to the beat of rock music.
I guess someone’s finally invented a robot that slacks off, eh? No, just kidding. The I-FAIRY was developed in conjunction with Japan’s National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, and I have no doubt that it can do everything that it says as far as being a museum guide.
After all, do we really need to pay some human being to walk around a museum and show us things when a robot could do it far more interestingly? By the way, the I-FAIRY is also designed to do corporate presentations. Seriously? Now I have heard just about everything about robots today.
Actually, I just heard some interesting fact about robots today that is more related to the Adult Entertainment Expo that is held next door to CES every year. Apparently, someone has invented Roxxxy, a very pleasurable fembot. However, I’m not going to bother to report on that. Do your own research if you want to hear more about that.

Bloxels glow-in-the-dark interactive blocks

Bloxels aren’t just any blocks, but they can change color and glow. Of course, it uses the power of technology to create this luminous and colorful effect.
Think of it as some colorful Legos, and each of the blocks has a transmitter so you can make some beautiful designs. Bloxels are not just some glowing cube, but the Bloxels work by obtaining its color data from the lower level Bloxel. Somehow the data is transmitted through a series of infrared high-speed flickers.
Bloxels are the creation of Jinha Lee, who had a vision of pixels that “escaped the monitor screen and became controllable by people”? I suppose the name Bloxel comes form a combination of the word “block” and “pixel”.
Each Bloxel consists of two full color LEDs for display, nine infrared LEDs for data transmission, a photo detector, battery, and micro controller. As I mentioned before, this is from the creation of Jinha Lee, but there doesn’t seem to be any toy companies in line to purchase this. I suppose that it could be sort of educational, and maybe they could figure out a way to make the blocks in all sorts of building block shapes. Of course, there are a lot of batteries to be sold separately here.

There’s nothing quite like owning a pair of earphones that make it appear as if you have a mushroom growing out of both ears. Strokes are one of the more serious diseases to strike anyone, and in some cases, it could prove to be fatal. Otherwise, others might get off lightly with a change in diet and lifestyle required, while a handful will suffer from limited movement and some degree of paralysis. This is one ATLAS that might not enhance your geographical knowledge, but it will definitely be a boon to those who can’t drive to the location themselves to receive proper physical therapy or find it just too expensive. At least you can rehabilitate yourself in the comfort of your own home, where a series of sensors within the ATLAS offers resistance in hand exercises. Virtual reality games are displayed on a computer which is synchronized to the glove, making the entire rehab experience all the more fun minus any drab.

We’re hoping that the final product would be a low-cost virtual-environment based glove system which can be utilized by all and sundry to be used for motor retraining of the arm, hand, fingers and thumb in patients. Of course, where low-cost is mentioned here, it more or less applies to developed nations, where those living in emerging countries might find it a whole lot more expensive due to their lower purchasing power. No pun intended, but if this were to be released, it would win the other rehab options hands down.

To say that the mPower Emergency Illuminator is a flashlight is like saying a Rolex is a watch. Granted, it is a true statement, but this mPower Emergency Illuminator is like the flashlight of the gods.
Well, it was designed by the car gods, and, by that, I mean, Porsche. Porsche Design Studio equipped the mPower with two widely available CR 123 3 volt lithium batteries. But what makes this flashlight the tops is it also includes a “groundbreaking reserve lithium battery with a shelf life of at least 20 years”.
That’s right, a shelf life of 20 years. I have no idea how long of an actual shine you would have with this, but dang, that’s 20 years! Gilligan and his friends could have used this. Pure Oasis Flow Radio works in the great outdoors

I have managed to see my fair share of radios with a retro twist and plenty of radios made for the outdoors, but I don’t believe I’ve ever seen one that actually combines the two. This Pure Oasis Flow does exactly that, it shows off great style while actually being capable of dealing with the weather outdoors. It also looks small enough that it would be a great sized radio to take with you to the beach.
The radio is actually splash resistant thanks to the case, plus the rugged case is weatherproof as well. It has cast aluminum framework and rubber seals to finish off the deal. As far as the electronic portion goes it has internet radio, podcasts, PURE sounds and music streaming anywhere that you have a Wi-Fi connection. Plus it has your normal FM radio reception. As far as keeping it powered goes, the radio has a built-in rechargeable ChargePAK battery. You can’t purchase it just yet though, it’ll be released sometime in the first half of 2010. Usually my tastes for retro gadgets knows no bounds. However, I think this bit of technology is a bit much even for me. However, if you like your devices to be incredibly unique, then you’ll love this Phonograph. If nothing else, it is most definitely unique. Plus, it appears to have modern conveniences, such as a clock to wake up with every morning.
You also have the bonus that it quite obviously has a lamp built into it, which is probably the most strange part of the device. It’d look almost normal were it not for that lamp popping out of the top of the clock. It seems to have a radio as well that goes with it. Unfortunately the details on the device are somewhat limited. Besides that it has an output power of 3W and was created in Guangdong, China. XV-11 robo-vacuum

The RPS Technology gives the XV-11 a 360-degree of the room, and then it learns a cleaning process with SLAM (simultaneous localization and mapping) in order to find the best and most efficient path to clean for the user.
Once it has finished cleaning, the XV-11 will automatically return to its original charger base, so it can recharge itself for when it will be used again. The user can program it with the cleaning scheduler program to make certain the XV-11 cleans once a day, if he or she likes.
They had the XV-11 on display at Pepcom, a huge press event that takes place before the main conference at CES. It seemed to make a piece of carpet look like new, and it left some interesting swirling pattern.
The Neato Robotics XV-11 should be available for purchase around February 4 for a price of $399.

Yahoo is teaming with big television company partners like Samsung, LG, Vizio and more to create Yahoo TV Widgets. This widget-based user experience for the TV uses popular Yahoo programs such as Yahoo! Finance, Yahoo! Weather, Yahoo! Video and Flickr. It also uses content from other providers such as Amazon, Blockbuster, eBay, CBS, Showtime, USA Today, Twitter, Facebook, and much more.
Even though the Yahoo Widget Engine was announced in August 2009, I finally got a chance to see it at Pepcom last night. As you can see, it is a chance for the user to watch TV with a little widgets down below. Selecting them will grant the user access to all sorts of online content.

We often think that machines are cold and unfeeling devices, making their decisions based on logic and logic alone (those who watched Terminator Salvation ought to be able to relate), which is why we rely on our feelings to churn out more human-like devices, as in the case of CD&I Associates with their Sense concept. Still, this concept ought to be commended as CD&I Associates wants to elevate everyday experiences like shopping, gaming and watching media online to a whole new level thanks to their wireless sensory aid. The system, with its tactile, heated sheath will be able to stimulate nerve receptors in the hand that in turn recreates the pressure, temperature, roughness, softness, or hardness properties of an object that is currently being viewed. Of course, there is a whole lot of work to be done here since the developers will need to encode the smell, touch and taste variations of multiple subjects being viewed, which is an extremely tedious task to say the least.
Half a dozen flavor cartridges will feature in the Sense, where it is capable of mimicking basic flavor types including bitterness, sweetness and saltiness among others. They are also toying with the idea of including seven more wax cartridges with micro emanators to reproduce different types of smell. All in all, the Sense concept looks and sounds like something just for the rich – I would much rather spend my money purchasing an ink cartridge for my printer instead of refilling these flavor and wax cartridges. South Korean companies have certainly come a long way since they first started off on wobbly ground, and boy are they conquering the global market in many industries. Their automakers, Hyundai and Kia are even able to give the Japanese companies a run for their yen, and Samsung and LG are already global players where consumer electronics are concerned. We’ll be taking a closer look at the latter today, with LG Electronics having the honor of introducing the industry’s first portable, battery-operated mobile DTV Stateside, where it was specially designed to receive new rugged over-the-air signals being transmitted by local broadcasters. The future for mobile DTV looks bright as hundreds of stations are expected to sign on the air this year in order to cater for portable TV reception demand that is currently on the uptrend.
Officially known as the DP570MH Mobile Digital Television with DVD Playback, it will be formally introduced to the masses at CES 2010 later this week. The Laylo will come in a slider format, boasting an eye-catching red color with a soft-touch finish and a reflective twist. Cipher Drinking Glass lets you know what the liquid is

Have you ever been in a party where every glass was the same, and you didn’t know which was yours? What’s really sick is when you take a sip, and discover that it is definitely not your drink.
Now imagine that you had these Cipher Drinking Glasses designed by Damjan Stankovic. See all those random colored squares on the glasses? Apparently, they have some odd ability to make certain words depending on what the liquid is in the glass. Depending on what squares appear, that will show what is in them.
It’s like those glasses back in the eighties that had the muscular men or buxom babes with the outfits that would disappear if there was liquid in the glass. I suppose that this is some sort of sensors in order to spell out what is in the cup.
You will note that it knows that one is “Coca-Cola” as opposed to “Pepsi”. Those would have to be some interesting sensors, and I wonder if they could detect a virgin drink from an alcoholic beverage. I mean, there must be thousands of possible drinking combinations, and I’m just not certain that this one glass could really do them all.
Unfortunately, this is still a concept device, so I doubt you’ll be seeing these glasses at a party anytime soon.

San Jose cops to get cameras on their heads

Some of you might remember when we reported on the Taser Axon, a camera that mounts on the head. According to Mercury News, the AXON project will apparently be used on police officers in the San Jose area.
Now, these devices are designed to sit right above the ear, just like you see in the picture. They will be activated as soon as the officer speaks to a citizen or suspect.
This is perfect for cases in which it is “your word against the officer”. This sort of makes you think twice when you really want to talk back to the cop you gave you a ticket that you know you didn’t deserve.
By the way, the videos are uploaded to a central server, and I would assume that the officer is to shut them off in downtime such as on the toilet or at the donut shop.
You know what it reminds me off? Aliens. Yes, before there was Avatar, James Cameron introduced us to a world of space marines with cameras on their ears. You might remember the scene where the one guy “adjusts” his camera by banging it against the wall. Hopefully these AXON cameras can take a hit like that.
I’m not certain when San Jose plans to implement this program, but I can’t help but think there will soon be a time when all officers will be required to wear these cameras.

Sure, they’re much prettier than the rest of the iPods released by Apple, but they’re lacking all of the storage space that we all know and love. The details are the AirStash are a little limited as of now. They’re just allowing a sliver of the information to leave you craving more on the device. Right now, I am writing from Las Vegas, and waiting for CES 2010 to officially begin. I’ll be attending CES Unveiled later this afternoon, where I will get a lot of “sneak peaks” at new products. In the meantime, there have been a lot of new products that have been getting leaked to the media.
For example, the IceTouch (YP-H1) from Samsung. This is a new PMP with “the world’s first 2-inch, full-color, transparent Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode (AMOLED) touch-screen display”. Yes, someone finally made a PMP with a completely transparent screen, and that someone was Samsung. Be sure that the history books are updated.
The IceTouch can function as “a DVD-quality video player, studio quality audio player, an ultra-portable photo album, and FM radio and even a portable storage device”. It supports such audio formats as MP3, WMA, OGG, FLAC, AAC, M4A, MP3HD codecs, as well as video playback for MPEG4, WMV, H.264, Xvid and Divx file formats.
The IceTouch has 16GB worth of memory, and the user interacts with it using a “TouchWiz Sweep” Interface. I’m not certain what that is, but it is “designed to provide a comfortable grip and give users new options for interacting with their player”.
The IceTouch comes in white with customizable skins of pink, blue, purple, and grey. It will be on display at Samsung’s booth at CES, but there is no word on a price or date of availability.

At $30 a pop, this makes for a very expensive calculator compared to those Made-in-China staples that tend to break down when you need it the most. Well you can tell that plenty of love has gone into its design, where the X Mark I will incorporates curves and designs that are not too far off from the award-winning range of PowerShot Digital cameras. Virtually anyone could have seen it coming, but what nobody made much mention of it. I’m talking about the progression of instant messaging. Did you notice how far Skype has come from the time of its release? First from offering IM services to VoIP, technology has finally caught up with our needs (or more like wants), with Skype continuing to lead the revolution in face-to-face online video communication by boasting support for High Definition Skype video calls on computers alongside Skype software that has already been embedded into Internet-connected widescreen TVs from an array of its consumer electronics manufacturer partners. Next thing you know, we’ll be having full High Definition video calls, followed by the next logical step – 3D (isn’t that supposed to be all the rage at CES this year?) The latest version of Skype for Windows is able to deliver up to 720p HD-quality video calling at 1,280 x 720 resolution, and at up to 30 frames per second – now how about that! You ought to be able to see your better half in greater clarity, warts and all for a smoother and richer video calling experience. Making an HD video call does require more resources though, where you are required to use a high-speed broadband connection, not to mention purchasing newer hardware in the form of an HD webcam to run with your machine that has at least a 1.8GHz dual-core processor.
Now the question is this – where the heck are you supposed to be able to purchase HD webcams? Fret not dear readers, CES 2010 will be the place where faceVsion and In Store Solutions will roll out new HD webcams from their stable, touting them to be optimized to play nice with Skype. Your processor need not work that hard anymore with these new Skype Certified HD webcams as they will handle the video encoding and processing onboard. The FV TouchCam N1 will be available from faceVsion from February onwards, where you can pick up a model with and without microphone for $99 and $69, respectively. In Store Solutions will release two new HD encoding webcams as well – the FREETALK HD PRO which is going for $120 and the FREETALK HD PRO PLUS that is a wee bit more expensive at $140. I saw this product at CES Unveiled, and I couldn’t help but wonder why someone hadn’t thought of mixing a light and a speaker together before.
Klipsch’s LightSpeaker, developed by Kadence Designs LLC, comes with a dimmable LED bulb and full-range speaker, which enables it to fit into five and six inch recessed light fixtures with a standard Edison socket. Accessories will allow the LightSpeaker to accommodate floor lamps, table lamps, as well as hanging light fixtures.
The LightSpeaker uses a 20 watt high-performance, low distortion digital amplifier for energy-efficient sound. The audio is delivered wirelessly with a standalone 2.4 GHz transmitter. So your sound can be taken from a laptop, CD Player, or iPod. The LightSpeaker can accommodate up to eight LightSpeakers, and it can equalize stereo sound in many rooms. Yes, with the simple application of light, all sound will be transferred across the house.

Light Touch uses a laser driven, interactive holographic display

Man, it seems like years ago that a small company in Israel introduced us to a light projected keyboard interface. If you remember it, it displayed a red keyboard template and the projector was able to determine what key the user was pressing and translate it to text on a screen. This enabled the user to completely get rid of a physical QWERTY keyboard and provide extra space on the desk (which I could use considering I’m using two keyboards at the moment). But Light Blue Optics is taking it to a whole new level with Light Touch, a complete keyboard and display interface which brings computing to just about any surface.

Light Touch can be used on any surface where a computer is needed.

The Light Touch system uses a tiny, iPod sized laser projector to project an interactive image onto any surface. In addition to the Qwerty Keyboard, it also display images like a small monitor display. Currently, the technology is WVGA resolution, but the images are auto focusing. The Light Touch is also WiFi and Bluetooth capable with 2GB of on board memory and a microSD slot that supports up to 32GB of additional memory.
No word on price or availability but the Light Touch will be unveiled this week at CES in Las Vegas, so there will probably be more details forthcoming.

Despite all of the conspiracy theories that robots will someday take over the world, you can’t help but love this robot. He’s completely harmless, all he does is play your favorite music all day long. He may have a permanently goofy expression on his face, but at least he has his uses. Plus he’s made out of new and old parts, which means you’d be giving new use for old discarded electronics.
These robots ship out worldwide and are assembled in New York by Lipson Robotics. In order to power the speaker, you can use the power adapter and plug it into the wall, use batteries or plug it into the USB port on your computer. I’m not certain what it is, but there is a lot of cool robot stuff happening today. First the JO-ZERO, the Remo, and now the OmniTread.
The OmniTread isn’t a humanoid robot, and it isn’t a kit that you can special order just yet. The OmniTread is the work of some developers at the University of Michigan, and it is designed for some very rugged work.
As you can see in the video (after the jump), you will note that the design of the OmniTread resembles that of a train. The serpentine robot has treads on all four sides of its segments, and pneumatic bellows that can lift itself up like a caterpillar.
Right now, the developers at the University of Michigan have two models of the OmniTread. One of them, the OT-4, is named because it has the ability to crawl through a small hole only four inches in diameter. Their experiments show them working with an Omnitread with an AC cord, but they do have a working model that is good for 75 hours worth of use with the help of some battery power.
The uses of the OmniTread are similar to the robo hummingbird that we reported on a few days ago. It is a machine that can go to places that we cannot, such as a collapsed building or cave-in. Just imagine having a durable camera mounted on the front of this guy, and you’ll see what I mean.
I wouldn’t be surprised if we see the OmniTread at work on the job in the near future. In fact, my source claims it was “ready to be deployed at a moment’s notice” for a quake that recently occurred in San Diego, but I couldn’t find a secondary source to back this up. Until then, let’s just assume that the OmniTread is just concept tech.

Remo Humanoid Kit

I’m going to speak a little boldy and say that the Remo Humanoid Robot Kit wishes that it was the JO-ZERO. Of course, I had some video footage of JO-ZERO in action. I’m afraid all my source had was this still shot of the Remo standing upright.
In other words, I don’t know how the Remo moves, which is really what you should look for when you get yourself a robot kit. The Remo (which is short for “robot brain”) does have some “high quality CCD cameras for image processing” as well as “pressure sensors on its feet for balance”.
The Remo is also powered by lithium batteries or by a simple plugging into an outlet. That would probably give it a short leash, though. By the way, remote control is attainable via Bluetooth, which is something that JO-ZERO doesn’t have at this time.
Okay, now that I’ve got the basic facts out of the way, I can finally talk about that face, or lack thereof. What is that, some sort of mask sample from The Phantom of the Opera musical? Who was playing the role of the Phantom, Howard the Duck?
Or maybe someone intends to make some sort of horror movie where the Remo starts killing everyone. After all, most slasher films boil down to some guy in a mask hacking people to death. You know, like Jason from theFriday the 13th movies, Mike Myers from the Halloween series, or that one guy in the Scream movies.
Well, if someone is planning on making a low-budget robot slasher film, then they had better be willing to pay the $4,358 price for the Remo. They can order it here.

JO-ZERO could be in next Transformers movie, as himself

Have you ever noticed how jerky and clumsy most robots move? I mean, they don’t call that one dance “The Robot” for nothing. This is simply not the case with JO-ZERO (pronounced “Jay-Oh Zero”).
Himeji Softworks wanted to develop a robot that was “stylish, speedy, and human-like” and I believe that they have succeeded. If you don’t believe me, watch the video.
What you are seeing isn’t deleted footage from a Transformers movie, but actual film from the International Robotics Exhibition 2009. I mean, JO-ZERO is really busting a move on the dance floor (presumably a sheet of paper) as well as a battery of other tricks that would make most stiff-necked robots green with envy.
The JO-ZERO has about twenty directions worth of movement (8 for the arms, 10 for the legs, and 2 for the back). So if it gets knocked down, it gets up again.
One of the reasons that the JO-ZERO looks so cool is because it was actually designed by a manga artist Minoru Kamiya, who created the anime show Act On!
The JO-ZERO robot kit has a microcomputer built in so it can be pre-programmed. It can also be controlled via controller (like one from a console video game) or IR remote. Any interested user can purchase the JO-ZERO kit for about $1,300.

Dymo Rhino 101 isn’t much, but it is convenient

It’s been a while since we reviewed the Dymo LabelWriter 450 Twin Turbo, with its awesome ability to print labels without any ink. I would have to say that the Dymo Rhino 101 is probably its poor cousin.
Of course, there really isn’t anything technical with the Rhino 101, really. It doesn’t have a keyboard, or anything to type out individual letters. In fact, it really is just a glorified roll of white tape.
Because of this, my source really bad-mouthed this product, going so far to deem it unnecessary. I would agree that you could probably do the same thing with some white tape and a Sharpie, but the Rhino 101 gives you something that you need for that: a flat surface.
That’s right, if you just had white tape and a Sharpie marker, than you would have to tear the tape, stick the tape, and hope that whatever you stuck it on would be flat enough for you to write on it. The Rhino 101 provides that flat surface, so you can just write what you want in the space provided, tear off, and stick it to anything, even carpet.
Yeah, that flat surface might not be much, but hey, I think it makes a world of difference. Besides, the Dymo Rhino is only $20.00. Surely this convenience is affordable at that price.

Asphaltfighters Stormbringer certainly ups the ante

Packing in a 999cc engine, the Stormbringer is capable of ekeing out 220hp with another 60 ponies which will kick in whenever you surpass the 180kmh – sort of like nitro for a bike, albeit under controlled conditions. Capable of surpassing the 198mph mark, the Stormbringer will hit 62mph in a mere 2.9 seconds, making it much faster in pick up compared to supercars, while other achievable targets include 124mph in 6.5 seconds, and 186mph in 13.9 seconds. Each purchase will come standard with a HELD riding suit and kevlar/carbon X-Lite helmet, and you know you will get your money’s worth since the riding position and suspension have been tailored for the buyer – you. This means no two machines are alike (unless you’re identical twins), and not everyone who sits on your ride will find it as comfortable as they might think it would be. Epson’s Augmented Reality cards

Epson wants you to celebrate the new year with one of the coolest technological achievements from last year. I’m not talking about the tablet, but Augmented Reality.
True, augmented reality was not created last year, but it really flourished in 2009 with numerous ad campaigns. I first experienced it at CES 2009, and I called it the “Coolest Gadget ever”. I’m sure I’ll see it at CES 2010, and on many more applications throughout the next year.
Apparently, there is some tradition in Japan that uses end of the year greeting cards, and so Epson decided to liven it up with a dash of augmented reality. These greeting cards, also known as nengajo, allow the users face to be wrapped in the animal personna of the new year. For 2010, this is the year of the tiger. I have a video of it after the jump if you want to see it for yourself, but I don’t have it translated.
To make one of these cards, all a user needs is an Epson Colorio printer. Then he or she just holds it up to the webcam, and prepare for something very, very awesome.
Granted, I don’t send New Years Cards, but that is only because we don’t have this custom in the United States. However, most people send Christmas cards, so I wouldn’t be surprised if I see some homemade augmented reality Christmas cards next holiday season. Of course, it’s probably too early to start thinking about Christmas 2010.

Robot Hummingbird could one day have a tiny camera

One of the most intriguing creatures in the animal kingdom is the hummingbird. These small birds have wings that move faster than 30 times per second, and they are the only bird that can fly backwards.
It does not surprise me that a Japanese researcher named Hiroshi Liu modeled his flying robot after the hummingbird. His robo-hummingbird, for lack of a better word, weighs up 2.6 grams and 10 centimeters long. Just to let you know, this is about the size of a non-robo-hummingbird.
Believe it or not, research into this robotic avian is at $2 million, and counting. The end-goal of this project is to create a robo-hummingbird with a tiny camera. This will allow the robo-hummingbird to fly into tight corners for going to places that humans cannot reach.
For example, in situations where a mineshaft has collapsed, and there is only tiny openings for air. Just send in the robo-hummingbird and check on the status on survivors. Now, you could achieve the same effect by mounting a tiny camera on a small flying toy copter, but the toy chopper would not be as stable in its flight.
Personally, I can easily see this robo-hummingbird being used as some sort of spy camera. I’m not certain if adding a colorful hummingbird disguise would fool anyone, though.

There are all types of solar chargers out there these days. This one is meant for those of you that are constantly traveling, but it would still work just fine for those that don’t travel at all. This solar charger actually doubles as a luggage tag, which is why it might be better suited for those that travel. Of course, you’ll have to find a way to make sure your luggage gets a bit more sunlight than it would normally receive. Otherwise, this isn’t going to work the greatest.

Logic Bolt Projector Phone

There has been a lot talk about the LG eXpo, a phone that has a pico-projector. However, CES last year had on display Logic Wireless’ Bolt projector phone. That phone is capable of throwing a VGA image on the wall that is 64 inches wide.
Of course, the projector is only one of the features of this phone that can run Symbian. It also has a touchscreen, as well as slots for two SIM cards.
It also has two cameras, one for the front and one for the back. I suppose that this is some design for the days when cellular phones will be all video-capable. Yeah, I’m still awaiting that day myself.
The Logic Bolt is available at, of all places, Sky Mall. It costs about $500, and that’s the unlocked price. I don’t know who wants this particular phone, as it doesn’t seem to have a carrier.
I’m going to venture a guess and say that this will be on display on CES on a little more than a week. If so, I would like to see how the projector fares against pico-projectors. If it can make the images more clear, then there might be market for this. As it is, it seems a little excessive.

The toaster is probably one of the most boring gadgets out there, which is probably why designers enjoy altering the classic toaster so much. Well one more designer is trying their hand at changing up the way we use our toasters. This one seems to take its inspiration directly from a printer. Instead of printing out pages though, it spits out fresh toast.
It’s be cool if it did actually print something onto the toast, since the design is so similar to a printer. On the top of the toaster you place several different pieces of bread. Then as it toasts the bread it drops them down below in a nice little stack. It’d be great for large families that need a stack of toasted bread in a hurry. So far it is still a concept though.

Toshiba and Electrolux Escargot snail vacuum cleaner

I think we all know what comes to mind when we think of a vacuum cleaner. You know, that stand up job with the wide front? I don’t think that vacuum cleaner design has changed in the past 30 years.
You got to admire that Toshiba, in a partnership with Electrolux, has created the Escargot, a vacuum that looks like a snail.
It’s always good to see a concept device that is “borrowed” from nature. The Escargot rolls up like that slimy gastropod, but it will fit in between the space of the large wheels that make up the Escargot’s “shell”.
It weighs about 2.1 kilograms, and it can it can be rolled around or carried with a shoulder strap. My source does not reveal how large this vacuum cleaner is, but if it was as large as a regular vacuum, than it wouldn’t be so compact, would it?
Personally, I’m already sold on it just by its shape alone. In fact, I highly recommend that Toshiba paints it in bright colors to look like Gary the snail from Spongebob Squarepants.
Yeah, I realize that that is unlikely, because by the time this concept probably sees the light of sales, Spongebob will have been canceled.

How many people have ever wanted a shelf that can hover? Hey, who wouldn’t? Well, you’ll be happy to know that there is a shelf like that out there.
This is the MOON AUDIO hovering shelf, and it uses the power of magnetic technology to keep the shelf aloft. You know the laws of attraction that keep two like charges repelling? Well, MOON AUDIO has harnessed it so the magnetic field keeps levitating the shelf without affecting what’s on it.
Apparently, this shelf was designed to hold stereo equipment. Now, it certainly doesn’t sound like a valid use of hovering technology, because I would have used it to make, I don’t know, flying vehicles or something. But if you are really into your stereo, then you know how much vibrations can affect your audio performance. With your stereo hovering in air, then it will no longer vibrate against the entertainment center or whatever you have it resting on.
Now, I don’t know how much this hovering shelf can lift, and I also don’t know how stable it is. I mean, can I push on it, and will the stereo fall off?
Of course, this kind of technology will cost you. How much, do you ask? Let’s talk about $500. For that price, I think I have a good point about better applications of hovering technology.

Art Lebedev’s See-through Semi-truck

Some of you have at least heard of Art Lebedev, the creator of the Optimus Maximus, the keyboard with a screen on every key. Some of you thought that was impractical, and it was quite expensive.
Art Lebedev has now conceived another idea that will probably very expensive to implement, but very useful. It is called the Transparentius, and it is a Harry Potter spell to turn a truck invisible.
Seriously, it actually is a way to put two LCD screens on the back of a semi truck to show what is in front of it. Of course, there would have to be a camera in front of the truck to create this sub-standard invisibility trick.
I can see the inspiration for this Transparentius, because we have all been behind a big semi trucks before. They usually move so slow, that we have to pass, but those trucks are massive that we can’t see around them. With these screens on the back, now you see when it is safe to pass.
Of course, those screens have to be pretty expensive, and then there is the camera that it feeds to. It could be an easy target for truck-stop robbers.
Well, this is still a concept for now, so maybe Mr. Levedev can iron out all the kinks of this device soon. Perhaps LCD screens will be really cheap by then.

The next-generation SYNC system for Ford vehicles will see an unprecedented improvement from the company – it will boast an integrated in-car Wi-Fi system that will run off your USB mobile broadband modem, turning all four wheels into a moving hot spot to help you start working even before you head off to the office. While those who can’t get enough of Facebook and other social networking sites even for a while will be pleased with this, others might not be so happy since they no longer have any more excuse to catch up on their reading or beauty sleep while they are on the road.
This new capability will be available as a standard option on selected SYNC-equipped vehicles without the need for any extra hardware or subscriptions that goes beyond the user-supplied mobile broadband modem. Don’t worry too much about security though, since the standard WiFi Protected Access 2 (WPA2) security protocols will be in force, which means only owner-permitted devices will be able to access the network so that in-car users won’t have to worry too much about having their computers hacked. All you need to do is insert your own compatible USB mobile broadband modem into the SYNC’s USB port to produce a secure wireless connection which will then have its signal broadcast throughout the vehicle.
The USB port offered by SYNC enables owners to leverage a variety of devices, where among these include the mobile broadband modem. The SYNC system can also be continuously upgraded through simple software updates, helping SYNC adapt to hook up with a variety of the latest devices. Not any Tom, Dick or Harry will be able to hook up to the SYNC system though – the driver must specifically allow that device to connect so that you won’t have any strangers or unauthorized users from “piggybacking” on the SYNC-provided signal.

Up till now, the service’s users can also check out their friends’ posts and photos at places around them. Now, with the rolling out of a new local advertising solution, those very same users are also able to check out tantalizing, special offers available in nearby stores to further tempt them to part with their money.
The Brightkite service enables users to look at the world around them via their phone’s camera, checking out real-time digital information on top of real-world locations. As the camera is pointed at different directions, the graphics will alter to accommodate various lens’ movements, as you check out your friends’ Brightkite data revealed around them. Imagine the possibilities of forging new partnerships with retailers, bars, restaurants and other businesses to enable Brightkite users to check out what those outlets are offering regardless of where they are.
According to Brightkite, “this initiative pioneers the latest in advertising – combining mobile phones, location awareness and augmented reality. This is truly a groundbreaking media campaign about which we, as well as our users, are very excited.” We’ll see about that though – just when you thought that the advertising industry is running out of ideas to entice potential shoppers, along comes this interesting and useful method.
