Toaster that mimics a printer

The toaster is probably one of the most boring gadgets out there, which is probably why designers enjoy altering the classic toaster so much.  Well one more designer is trying their hand at changing up the way we use our toasters.  This one seems to take its inspiration directly from a printer.  Instead of printing out pages though, it spits out fresh toast.
It’s be cool if it did actually print something onto the toast, since the design is so similar to a printer.  On the top of the toaster you place several different pieces of bread.  Then as it toasts the bread it drops them down below in a nice little stack.  It’d be great for large families that need a stack of toasted bread in a hurry.  So far it is still a concept though.

Toshiba and Electrolux Escargot snail vacuum cleaner

I think we all know what comes to mind when we think of a vacuum cleaner. You know, that stand up job with the wide front? I don’t think that vacuum cleaner design has changed in the past 30 years.
You got to admire that Toshiba, in a partnership with Electrolux, has created the Escargot, a vacuum that looks like a snail.
It’s always good to see a concept device that is “borrowed” from nature. The Escargot rolls up like that slimy gastropod, but it will fit in between the space of the large wheels that make up the Escargot’s “shell”.
It weighs about 2.1 kilograms, and it can it can be rolled around or carried with a shoulder strap. My source does not reveal how large this vacuum cleaner is, but if it was as large as a regular vacuum, than it wouldn’t be so compact, would it?
Personally, I’m already sold on it just by its shape alone. In fact, I highly recommend that Toshiba paints it in bright colors to look like Gary the snail from Spongebob Squarepants.
Yeah, I realize that that is unlikely, because by the time this concept probably sees the light of sales, Spongebob will have been canceled.

How many people have ever wanted a shelf that can hover? Hey, who wouldn’t? Well, you’ll be happy to know that there is a shelf like that out there.
This is the MOON AUDIO hovering shelf, and it uses the power of magnetic technology to keep the shelf aloft. You know the laws of attraction that keep two like charges repelling? Well, MOON AUDIO has harnessed it so the magnetic field keeps levitating the shelf without affecting what’s on it.
Apparently, this shelf was designed to hold stereo equipment. Now, it certainly doesn’t sound like a valid use of hovering technology, because I would have used it to make, I don’t know, flying vehicles or something. But if you are really into your stereo, then you know how much vibrations can affect your audio performance. With your stereo hovering in air, then it will no longer vibrate against the entertainment center or whatever you have it resting on.
Now, I don’t know how much this hovering shelf can lift, and I also don’t know how stable it is. I mean, can I push on it, and will the stereo fall off?
Of course, this kind of technology will cost you. How much, do you ask? Let’s talk about $500. For that price, I think I have a good point about better applications of hovering technology.

Art Lebedev’s See-through Semi-truck

Some of you have at least heard of Art Lebedev, the creator of the Optimus Maximus, the keyboard with a screen on every key. Some of you thought that was impractical, and it was quite expensive.
Art Lebedev has now conceived another idea that will probably very expensive to implement, but very useful. It is called the Transparentius, and it is a Harry Potter spell to turn a truck invisible.
Seriously, it actually is a way to put two LCD screens on the back of a semi truck to show what is in front of it. Of course, there would have to be a camera in front of the truck to create this sub-standard invisibility trick.
I can see the inspiration for this Transparentius, because we have all been behind a big semi trucks before. They usually move so slow, that we have to pass, but those trucks are massive that we can’t see around them. With these screens on the back, now you see when it is safe to pass.
Of course, those screens have to be pretty expensive, and then there is the camera that it feeds to. It could be an easy target for truck-stop robbers.
Well, this is still a concept for now, so maybe Mr. Levedev can iron out all the kinks of this device soon. Perhaps LCD screens will be really cheap by then.

Ford SYNC takes Wi-Fi route

The next-generation SYNC system for Ford vehicles will see an unprecedented improvement from the company – it will boast an integrated in-car Wi-Fi system that will run off your USB mobile broadband modem, turning all four wheels into a moving hot spot to help you start working even before you head off to the office. While those who can’t get enough of Facebook and other social networking sites even for a while will be pleased with this, others might not be so happy since they no longer have any more excuse to catch up on their reading or beauty sleep while they are on the road.
This new capability will be available as a standard option on selected SYNC-equipped vehicles without the need for any extra hardware or subscriptions that goes beyond the user-supplied mobile broadband modem. Don’t worry too much about security though, since the standard WiFi Protected Access 2 (WPA2) security protocols will be in force, which means only owner-permitted devices will be able to access the network so that in-car users won’t have to worry too much about having their computers hacked. All you need to do is insert your own compatible USB mobile broadband modem into the SYNC’s USB port to produce a secure wireless connection which will then have its signal broadcast throughout the vehicle.
The USB port offered by SYNC enables owners to leverage a variety of devices, where among these include the mobile broadband modem. The SYNC system can also be continuously upgraded through simple software updates, helping SYNC adapt to hook up with a variety of the latest devices. Not any Tom, Dick or Harry will be able to hook up to the SYNC system though – the driver must specifically allow that device to connect so that you won’t have any strangers or unauthorized users from “piggybacking” on the SYNC-provided signal.

Brightkite releases augmented reality advertising solution

Brightkite, the Social Discovery Network, recently rolled out the first national augmented reality advertising solution. Users of Brightkite have gained the ability to access its augmented reality (AR) service since August earlier this year courtesy of the company’s partnership with Layar. Up till now, the service’s users can also check out their friends’ posts and photos at places around them. Now, with the rolling out of a new local advertising solution, those very same users are also able to check out tantalizing, special offers available in nearby stores to further tempt them to part with their money.
The Brightkite service enables users to look at the world around them via their phone’s camera, checking out real-time digital information on top of real-world locations. As the camera is pointed at different directions, the graphics will alter to accommodate various lens’ movements, as you check out your friends’ Brightkite data revealed around them. Imagine the possibilities of forging new partnerships with retailers, bars, restaurants and other businesses to enable Brightkite users to check out what those outlets are offering regardless of where they are.
According to Brightkite, “this initiative pioneers the latest in advertising – combining mobile phones, location awareness and augmented reality. This is truly a groundbreaking media campaign about which we, as well as our users, are very excited.” We’ll see about that though – just when you thought that the advertising industry is running out of ideas to entice potential shoppers, along comes this interesting and useful method. Guess mobile advertising has gotten yet another boost in such a form, but it will take some time before it rolls out worldwide as this does not seem to be as effective in emerging markets at the moment, so only developed countries with the relevant infrastructure will be able to support such a model. Take note though – this AR campaign is running on the Brightkite service till the end of this year, where it is available for both Android and iPhone devices.

Having a train to go around the bottom of your tree is a pretty classic choice.  If you want something a little different though, these cable cars are one way to pull that off.  Of course you’ll have to sacrifice your current tree topper in order to pull off the look.  However, it’ll add a unique and unforgettable element to your tree.
These cable cars will travel up and down your Christmas tree all day long.  There are a total of two cars filled with passengers that go between the two stations.  Knowing how often I’ve managed to knock over my train set, these cable cars are definitely best for the less clumsy out there.  Especially since if you trip over that cable, it’s highly likely that you’ll bring down the entire tree.  These are priced at $49 from Walmart, but as of now they’re all out of stock.

MATTRACKS: Scooter through the Snow

If you can’t wait until summer to try the Chariot Skates, then you may might want to see this product that is made for the winter snow.
The MATTRACK can best be described as a scooter, but with a tank tread instead of wheels so it will go through the snow. It has a handle on it so it can steer, and the frame is mounted on a tread in a way where the user can lean to make turns as well. There is a video of it in action after the jump if you want to see it for yourself.
It is designed for the winter sports enthusiast like snowboarders, but the MATTRACK doesn’t have any thing to clamp to the user’s feet. Instead, it has a metal grill of a thing that ought to hold the rider. If the rider falls off, there is a tether to turn off the power so the MATTRACKS doesn’t go away from the rider.
The MATTRACKS also has come convenient carrying handles so the user can tote it around easily enough when he or she is not on the snow.
I have no idea what this thing runs on, nor how much this costs. All I know is that it looks like a lot of fun, and I’m probably going to get a lot of snow this year. Why shouldn’t I have fun with it on a MATTRACKS?

Intel unveils next generation Atom platform

Intel’s Atom processor has been pretty successful so far to say the least, and the current worldwide leader in processors are certainly not going to rest on their laurels – hence coming up with a next generation Intel Atom platform. This will be the first Intel processors that see the integration of graphics as well as a memory controller in the CPU, which in turn results in power reduction, smaller systems and performance jumps. This higher level of integration alongside the inclusion of 45nm manufacturing will see the average power consumption go down to 20% over the previous generation, which will certainly carve a smile on netbook manufacturers’ faces as their products will experience a longer battery life. We can expect to see major OEMs roll out netbooks with the new Intel Atom processors within the next few weeks, so those who want to own a new netbook might want to hold off their purchases for a while more if the situation has yet to reach the urgent and critical level, as chugging along to a new processor is always much better compared to running on something older. The latest Intel Atom platform for netbooks will comprise of a new Intel Atom processor known as the N450, alongside a new low-power Intel NM10 Express Chipset. For those who are looking at entry level desktop PCs, you can choose from the Intel Atom processor D410 or the dual core D510, where it will also be paired with the Intel NM10 Express Chipset. What’s the big deal about these new Atom processors, you ask? Well, one of the most significant features would be the integration of memory controller and graphics into the CPU, making it a first in the industry on x-86 chips. This results in significant cost reductions, a smaller average footprint and being more power efficient to keep in line with the green theme. Dell Inspiron Mini 10 takes Atom N450 route

Just as we covered news of the new Intel Atom platform being unveiled, we have news of Dell being one of the first few computer manufacturers to release their Atom N450-powered netbooks to the market, in the form of the Inspiron Mini 10. This tried and tested model is back with a new swagger, boasting a better design as well as a longer lasting battery life. Some of the updates found on the new Mini 10 will include optional high definition entertainment bundles which deliver rich, smooth playback of streaming HD video apart from going about regular tasks such as Web surfing, email and listening to music and sharing user-generated content in real time with aplomb. Dell hopes to roll out the redesigned Inspiron Mini 10 to the masses in time for the first part of January 2010.
Boasting a new design, the Inspiron Mini 10 will come with a 10.1″ display that includes a textured, smudge-resistant palm rest and sculpted keys. New version of the LG RoboKing

Look out Roomba, you might have yourself some serious competition with the new version of the LG RoboKing. Is it bigger than you, or is the model (the pretty one on the right) smaller?
Looks like you’re going to have to take on iRobot’s best seller in a titanic Rocky Balboa/Apollo Creed fight. I can tell you that the RoboKing is much quieter than its predecessor. The former version was 63db, while this one is 50db.
It also has two cameras, which they say is an industrial first. I believe that the two cameras give the RoboKing a serious advantage over a robot vacuum with just one. These two cameras allow the RoboKing to better analyze its environment, so it knows exactly where to clean.
The RoboKing is also claimed to have a 30 percent speed increase. This has nothing to do with its size, so I’m told. It is actually smaller in the height category, by the way. This version is 90mm tall while the former version is 130mm.
So far, I don’t have any word of a price or availability date as yet. Maybe they will announce that at CES 2010. I hope they have this on display at CES, because I want to see how fast it can suck up dust. Perhaps LG will use it to clean up the floors after the big show.

North Face Audio Jacket has iPod controls on sleeve

Staying attached to your audio accessories can sometimes be difficult in the winter.  Especially for those that have an iPod Touch, since normal gloves tend to cause a problem with switching songs.  These jackets from North Face allow for you to control your MP3 player without ever having to get it out.  Which is great for those of you that like to be out in the wet snow, where it’s probably best your iPod stays dry.
You control your iPod by using the small joystick located on the sleeve of the jacket.  It’ll allow you to do all the basic functions like skip the song and adjust the volume.  Then your iPod can be stored within the inner media pocket where you plug it in at.  There is both a female and a male version of the jacket and both will cost you $348.95.

Synaptics introduce Fuse cellphone concept

Synaptics Incorporated recently introduced the Fuse concept cellphone which demonstrated where the future of user interaction is headed, and it seems that the iPhone could be in for a challenge. After all, the Fuse will introduce multiple interface technologies for the first time, among them including multi-touch capacitive sensing, haptic feedback, 3-D graphics, and force, grip, and proximity sensing. Are you Apple fanboys quaking just yet? Of course, it is way too early to tell whether the Fuse is able to usurp the iPhone since there are still many other things to consider about, especially its ease-of-use and the all important App Store competitor.
While the touchscreen display is almighty in this day and age, we must remember that Synaptics was first to introduce the touchscreen way back in August 2006, thanks to their award-winning Onyx cellphone concept. Other phone manufacturers have long followed suit, and Synaptics has gone on to the next level by tackling the issue of single-handed usage with the need to look at the screen by coming up with the Fuse. The Fuse will boast innovative sensing technologies that surround the entire device to enable quick, intuitive, single-handed navigation. Take for example its grip sensing capability that relies on force and capacitive touch sensors on the sides of the phone, where users can execute pan and scroll functions in a jiffy. Apart from that, the Fuse is first off the blocks to introduce 2D navigation from the back of the phone! This will allow one to enjoy effective and fun single-handed control without having to obstruct the display.
It makes us wonder when will Synaptics actually roll out the Fuse cellphone concept, moving it to the production stage as we’re pretty sure it is able to make more than just a ripple in the industry’s ocean. After all, modern cellphones are all about progress and change, and the Fuse is definitely a game changer – assuming it ever enters production, that is.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Pureness in the US

Folks living Stateside have plenty of cellphone options to choose from, that’s for sure. Well, with a myriad of cellphone operators as well as handsets available, one is spoilt for choice, and it doesn’t help that Sony Ericsson has just released their Xperia Pureness in this part of the world – touted to be the first handset in the world that comes with a transparent liquid crystal LCD screen. Sungale’s IPTV/PMP Kula set to splash at CES 2010

In 2010, Sungale is planning on releasing the Kula, “the first IPTV to access over 500 local and international channels combined with a fully functional PMP”.
This new IPTV/PMP has 2 GB of internal memory that is good for music (WMA, MP3M WAV, AAC, OGG formats), video (AVI, MPEG4, DIVX, XVID, RM/RMVB, DAT, WMV, 3GP & FLV formats), and photos (JPG, BMP, TIFF, PNG formats). The user can also use the SD/MMC slot to upgrade to 16GB worth of memory.
This Kula will come with various channel packages that are customizable with the Basic, the Kid, and the Grand. The first two packages will give users 100 channels for free, and the Grand is a special service that offers 500 channels. The user can choose from all sorts of live streaming programs that are selectable by country, language, and topics like the News, Sports, and Finance.
The Kula is powered by a rechargeable battery and has a 4.3 inch screen. It will be on display at CES 2010, along with some of the company’s other products. According to Gary Bennett, the Sungale VP of Sales, “The Kula is the next big thing that will revolutionize the way people watch TV”.
That is a very big claim, Gary, because with mobile devices and internet video streaming channels, I believe that the TV-watching revolution has already begun.

Seagate Pulsar SSD

Seagate’s latest foray into the world of SSDs has resulted in the Seagate Pulsar drive, making it the first product in its new enterprise solid state drive (SSD) family. The Pulsar was specially designed for enterprise blade and general server applications, where it relies on single-level cell (SLC) technology to deliver up to 200GB capacity. Despite all the storage space within, it was built in a 2.5-” small form factor with a SATA interface.
