AirStash Boosts iPhone Storage Wirelessly

Back when the classic iPod was released with 160GB of memory, it seemed as if the amount of memory on Apple devices could only get better and better.  Then the iPhone and iPod Touch came out and had a fraction of the memory.  Sure, they’re much prettier than the rest of the iPods released by Apple, but they’re lacking all of the storage space that we all know and love.  Well this AirStash is used to wirelessly give your iPhone and iPod Touch the memory boost it needs.
2010.01.05sairsThe details are the AirStash are a little limited as of now.  They’re just allowing a sliver of the information to leave you craving more on the device.  Particularly how much it will end up costing you.  It does promise to expand the storage of your device with a wireless memory card that takes swappable SD cards.  All of this can hook up to your computer through the USB port.  I imagine that details will start trickling out later this week.

Samsung IceTouch PMP with transparent AMOLED screen

Right now, I am writing from Las Vegas, and waiting for CES 2010 to officially begin. I’ll be attending CES Unveiled later this afternoon, where I will get a lot of “sneak peaks” at new products. In the meantime, there have been a lot of new products that have been getting leaked to the media.
For example, the IceTouch (YP-H1) from Samsung. This is a new PMP with “the world’s first 2-inch, full-color, transparent Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode (AMOLED) touch-screen display”. Yes, someone finally made a PMP with a completely transparent screen, and that someone was Samsung. Be sure that the history books are updated.
500x_icetouch_blue_011_copyThe IceTouch can function as “a DVD-quality video player, studio quality audio player, an ultra-portable photo album, and FM radio and even a portable storage device”. It supports such audio formats as MP3, WMA, OGG, FLAC, AAC, M4A, MP3HD codecs, as well as video playback for MPEG4, WMV, H.264, Xvid and Divx file formats.
The IceTouch has 16GB worth of memory, and the user interacts with it using a “TouchWiz Sweep” Interface. I’m not certain what that is, but it is “designed to provide a comfortable grip and give users new options for interacting with their player”.
The IceTouch comes in white with customizable skins of pink, blue, purple, and grey. It will be on display at Samsung’s booth at CES, but there is no word on a price or date of availability.

Canon X Mark I is green

Just how green is the Canon X Mark I calculator? Well, for starters, it looks very Apple-sque, and is made up from recycled PowerShot lenses – at least where the glass elements are concerned. At $30 a pop, this makes for a very expensive calculator compared to those Made-in-China staples that tend to break down when you need it the most. Well you can tell that plenty of love has gone into its design, where the X Mark I will incorporates curves and designs that are not too far off from the award-winning range of PowerShot Digital cameras. Besides, it is fully solar-powered, helping reduce waste while making it virtually useable anywhere. Pick from either black or white colors.

Skype video calls take high definition route

Virtually anyone could have seen it coming, but what nobody made much mention of it. I’m talking about the progression of instant messaging. Did you notice how far Skype has come from the time of its release? First from offering IM services to VoIP, technology has finally caught up with our needs (or more like wants), with Skype continuing to lead the revolution in face-to-face online video communication by boasting support for High Definition Skype video calls on computers alongside Skype software that has already been embedded into Internet-connected widescreen TVs from an array of its consumer electronics manufacturer partners. Next thing you know, we’ll be having full High Definition video calls, followed by the next logical step – 3D (isn’t that supposed to be all the rage at CES this year?) More on HD Skype video calls at CES right after the jump.
The latest version of Skype for Windows is able to deliver up to 720p HD-quality video calling at 1,280 x 720 resolution, and at up to 30 frames per second – now how about that! You ought to be able to see your better half in greater clarity, warts and all for a smoother and richer video calling experience. Making an HD video call does require more resources though, where you are required to use a high-speed broadband connection, not to mention purchasing newer hardware in the form of an HD webcam to run with your machine that has at least a 1.8GHz dual-core processor.
skype-hdNow the question is this – where the heck are you supposed to be able to purchase HD webcams? Fret not dear readers, CES 2010 will be the place where faceVsion and In Store Solutions will roll out new HD webcams from their stable, touting them to be optimized to play nice with Skype. Your processor need not work that hard anymore with these new Skype Certified HD webcams as they will handle the video encoding and processing onboard. The FV TouchCam N1 will be available from faceVsion from February onwards, where you can pick up a model with and without microphone for $99 and $69, respectively. In Store Solutions will release two new HD encoding webcams as well – the FREETALK HD PRO which is going for $120 and the FREETALK HD PRO PLUS that is a wee bit more expensive at $140. Both of these will hit the market in two months’ time.

IPEVO Tubular Wireless Speakers

IPEVO is well known for their range of VoIP devices, especially those that function in tandem with Skype. Well, the company’s back at CES 2010 yet again with their latest release known as the Tubular. The Tubular comprises of a couple of three-watt speakers which can be hooked for two-way stereo sound. Apart from that, you can also live out the wireless lifestyle since Tubular is Bluetooth-enabled, where it can be used with just about any Bluetooth-enabled music player. This would mean PCs, notebooks, netbooks, cellphones and iPods are fair game to the IPEVO Tubular. We’ll take a closer look at the IPEVO Tubular wireless speakers right after the jump.
It is pretty evident where the Tubular receive its name from – via the special design of its interlocking left and right speakers. Both speakers can be locked together in a tube shape, and when they are required to see action, they are easily separated. Rejoining them does not require any rocket science – all you need is a gentle twist and you’re good to go. Featuring a lightweight, compact and modern design, the speakers are highly portable as we’re pretty sure you can always make more room in your luggage to tote around another 9.5 ounces of items.
ipevo-tubularBluetooth pairing might get a little bit tricky for first timers, and it would be best to have an experienced hand guide you through it. The multifunction button on the primary speaker helps you achieve a Bluetooth connection, in which it also doubles up as an On/Off button, with a couple of other separate buttons for volume control. When paired with selected Bluetooth devices, all three buttons can also function as a method of navigation through tracks while performing play and pause functions. It features standard Bluetooth performance boundaries including the 10 meter radius, but goes one up as you can use your own portable media player as the remote control. Capable of running up to 8 hours on a single charge with a standby time of up to 100 hours, the Tubular Wireless Speakers from IPEVO will retail for $79.

Mophie to offer iPhone credit card reader

When the iPhone was first released a few years ago, the whole world was abuzz with anticipation on how Apple would be able to an above-average cellphone experience to the masses, and I must admit, we weren’t disappointed. Heck, expectations were so high that folks even queued up outside the store for a couple of days before its release, willing to fork out a whopping $599 outright for the handset (and that is even before one takes into consideration the monthly fees). Well, the iPhone has certainly come a long way since its release with incremental upgrades and updates introduced along the way, and it seems as though this smartphone is able to do just about anything (save for stemming pollution around the world). Today, we bring you news of another new function introduced to the iPhone thanks to Mophie – with their iPhone credit card reader.
mophie-ccMophie, the popular iPhone and iPod accessory and battery add-on maker, will use CES 2010 as the platform to introduce their iPhone credit card reader and third-party app, marking the accessory manufacturer’s first attempt to break into the lucrative mobile payment systems market. The accessory has been unimaginatively dubbed as the “Credit Card Reader”, where each purchase will be accompanied by a complimentary third party processing application which enables one to turn the iPhone into a functional device that accepts credit payments simply by swiping one’s credit card through a special casing attached that is connected to their handset.
There are still a great many details concerning this new mobile payment system by Mophie that have yet to be unveiled, and industry analysts are pretty sure that the device’s success will depend largely on the design and bulk of the iPhone add-on alongsde a price point that is hoped to be customer friendly. Make no mistake, this device isn’t about to start a monopoly in such a segment since it will go up head-to-head against Square. The Mophie Credit Card Reader will be packaged as an iPhone-only shell case which is similar to their Juice Pack Air battery pack for iPhone.

SMS Snoop captures Tigers of the world

Thinking of pulling off a Tiger Woods? You’d best go through your thought processes a couple of times more with wives and girlfriends being all the more wary about your ‘good boy’ image, as they now have the help of SMS Snoop – an application that was specially designed and programmed to catch those who abuse cellphone technology by cheating on their spouse or partner via SMS. All you need is a momentary lapse of concentration, where your spouse can then install the application without you knowing any better, and each SMS sent out by you will also be forwarded to their cellphone. All data can be saved or retrieved at any time for future proof in the event of infidelity. We do wonder how long this game can keep up though – especially if one checks through the bill each month to see the SMS costs double.

Greenhouse Cork USB Drive

Those that enjoy their bottles of wine on a pretty regular basis, might like a reminder of what is waiting for them if they can ever manage to get their work done for the day.  This cork may not look like much, but once opened up it reveals a flash drive to keep all of your important or not so important documents on.
It’s a pretty simple device beyond that it has the novelty of being a cork.  Plus it is nice that the cork actually has the USB drive’s information printed directly on the cork.  Then you’ll always be able to easily remember that there’s only 2GB of memory on the drive.  It’s not out just yet though, it’ll start shipping out at the beginning of February.  You can currently pre-order it for ¥ 4,750.00 or about $51 from Geek Stuff 4U.

iVictrola iPhone and iPod Touch Amplifier

If you prefer new technology that looks much older than it actually is, then this device would be great to have lying around.  It looks like more of an antique than an even remotely new gadget.  Yet it will happily play your iPod all day long and without using a single battery.  Not only that, but you won’t be forced to plug this into the wall either.  Making this an extremely convenient gadget.
iVictriola-1It seems almost impossible for there to be no batteries, nor the need for it to be plugged in.  Not to mention that this doesn’t use a solar panel or anything else along those lines.  Instead it uses an entirely acoustic amplification.  The horn is made from metal, which actually maximizes that amplification.  The base itself is hand-carved from walnut, that walnut is pulled from remnants of high-end furniture.  Unfortunately, this device is fairly expensive, it’ll cost you $400.

Klipsch LightSpeaker brings sound and light together

I saw this product at CES Unveiled, and I couldn’t help but wonder why someone hadn’t thought of mixing a light and a speaker together before.
Klipsch’s LightSpeaker, developed by Kadence Designs LLC, comes with a dimmable LED bulb and full-range speaker, which enables it to fit into five and six inch recessed light fixtures with a standard Edison socket. Accessories will allow the LightSpeaker to accommodate floor lamps, table lamps, as well as hanging light fixtures.
The LightSpeaker uses a 20 watt high-performance, low distortion digital amplifier for energy-efficient sound. The audio is delivered wirelessly with a standalone 2.4 GHz transmitter. So your sound can be taken from a laptop, CD Player, or iPod. The LightSpeaker can accommodate up to eight LightSpeakers, and it can equalize stereo sound in many rooms. Yes, with the simple application of light, all sound will be transferred across the house.
Light-Speakers-SystemThe LED bulb is rated for 40,000 hours, which enables it to last for 15 years. It can supposedly reduce daily lighting expenses by 80 percent, because it uses 10 watts to produce light that are bright enough to replace up to a 65 watt blub.
The LightSpeaker is slated to be released in March as a bundled package. A set consists of two LightSpeakers, transmitter, radio frequency remote, mini-jack to RCA plug cable, lenses and trim, and will sell for $599. A single one will sell for about $249.

Light Touch takes virtual interfaces to a colorful level

Light Touch uses a laser driven, interactive holographic display
Man, it seems like years ago that a small company in Israel introduced us to a light projected keyboard interface. If you remember it, it displayed a red keyboard template and the projector was able to determine what key the user was pressing and translate it to text on a screen. This enabled the user to completely get rid of a physical QWERTY keyboard and provide extra space on the desk (which I could use considering I’m using two keyboards at the moment). But Light Blue Optics is taking it to a whole new level with Light Touch, a complete keyboard and display interface which brings computing to just about any surface.

Light Touch can be used on any surface where a computer is needed.Light Touch can be used on any surface where a computer is needed.
The Light Touch system uses a tiny, iPod sized laser projector to project an interactive image onto any surface. In addition to the Qwerty Keyboard, it also display images like a small monitor display. Currently, the technology is WVGA resolution, but the images are auto focusing. The Light Touch is also WiFi and Bluetooth capable with 2GB of on board memory and a microSD slot that supports up to 32GB of additional memory.
Light Touch uses a laser driven, interactive holographic displayNo word on price or availability but the Light Touch will be unveiled this week at CES in Las Vegas, so there will probably be more details forthcoming.

Peanut Memory Stick Holder

Even hearing about a memory stick holder, most people would instantly write it off as ridiculous.  At first, I would have agreed.  However, there are several cases where it could make life a little more convenient.  A lot of USB drives have a way to hang onto them through their lid.  If you lose that lid though, you lose the ability to carry it on your keys.  This holder would allow for you to store your USB drive on your keychain and keep it safe.
yhst-53777107109672_2084_46402132It’s just a small peanut shaped holder that conceals your drive within it.  Really, I think it’s better than a lot of the drives that comes with the keychain attached to either the drive itself or the lid.  Either option comes with complications.  This way you can solve both issues by storing it in a neoprene case (that’s the stuff they make wetsuits out of).  You can purchase one of these cases for $6.99 through Pop Deluxe.

Star Wars Lightsaber MP3 Player

This MP3 player is definitely for the extremely dedicated Star Wars fans.  There are those that just watch the movies and can throw out the occasional quote.  Then there’s the other bunch that can quote over half of most of the movies and has at the very least gone someplace with a toy lightsaber attached to their hip.  That is, if not going in full storm trooper gear or in any other Star Wars costume.  Well for those that live and breathe Star Wars now you can own a lightsaber MP3 player.
star_wars_lightsaber_mp3_playerA couple of years back there were rumors of such a device existing, but it could never actually be confirmed.  Now there is a company offering these MP3 players in two different forms.  They aren’t out just yet, they’ll be released sometime in February of this year.  It measures 3.14 inches in length and has a microSD memory card slot.  There is no LCD screen, so the songs will just be played in the order that they’re stored on the memory card.  You can purchase one of your own for $23.90 from NCSX.

Folderix Flash Drives shaped like folders

Those poor yellow folders don’t seem to get nearly as much use now that you can do a great deal of your paperwork on the computer.  Sure, paper copies of things are still helpful, but those folders will never be used as much as before.  If you’re feeling a little sentimental and want to show that you remember the paper folder, now you can have a flash drive that’s shaped like one.
folderix-colors-720Alright, so it was actually designed to look like the folders within your computer.  Which means for those of you that like to take your computer interactions a little more literal, this would work great.  Then when you say you need to put something in the folder, it’s going into an actual folder shaped drive.  It’s available in 3 different colors, the gold/yellow color, blue and purple.  These drives designed by Art Lebedev can hold 4GB of data and will cost you $55 a piece.

Speaker Bot plays your MP3 player

lipson_robot_speaker_botDespite all of the conspiracy theories that robots will someday take over the world, you can’t help but love this robot.  He’s completely harmless, all he does is play your favorite music all day long.  He may have a permanently goofy expression on his face, but at least he has his uses.  Plus he’s made out of new and old parts, which means you’d be giving new use for old discarded electronics.
These robots ship out worldwide and are assembled in New York by Lipson Robotics.  In order to power the speaker, you can use the power adapter and plug it into the wall, use batteries or plug it into the USB port on your computer.  He even comes branded with a metal nameplate to declare the robots origins (Lipson Robotics).  The speaker will work with any MP3 player and can be purchased for $550 from Etsy.

I’m not certain what it is, but there is a lot of cool robot stuff happening today. First the JO-ZEROthe Remo, and now the OmniTread.
The OmniTread isn’t a humanoid robot, and it isn’t a kit that you can special order just yet. The OmniTread is the work of some developers at the University of Michigan, and it is designed for some very rugged work.
As you can see in the video (after the jump), you will note that the design of the OmniTread resembles that of a train. The serpentine robot has treads on all four sides of its segments, and pneumatic bellows that can lift itself up like a caterpillar.
earthquake_californiaRight now, the developers at the University of Michigan have two models of the OmniTread. One of them, the OT-4, is named because it has the ability to crawl through a small hole only four inches in diameter. Their experiments show them working with an Omnitread with an AC cord, but they do have a working model that is good for 75 hours worth of use with the help of some battery power.
The uses of the OmniTread are similar to the robo hummingbird that we reported on a few days ago. It is a machine that can go to places that we cannot, such as a collapsed building or cave-in. Just imagine having a durable camera mounted on the front of this guy, and you’ll see what I mean.
I wouldn’t be surprised if we see the OmniTread at work on the job in the near future. In fact, my source claims it was “ready to be deployed at a moment’s notice” for a quake that recently occurred in San Diego, but I couldn’t find a secondary source to back this up. Until then, let’s just assume that the OmniTread is just concept tech.

Remo Humanoid Kit

I’m going to speak a little boldy and say that the Remo Humanoid Robot Kit wishes that it was the JO-ZERO. Of course, I had some video footage of JO-ZERO in action. I’m afraid all my source had was this still shot of the Remo standing upright.
In other words, I don’t know how the Remo moves, which is really what you should look for when you get yourself a robot kit. The Remo (which is short for “robot brain”) does have some “high quality CCD cameras for image processing” as well as “pressure sensors on its feet for balance”.
The Remo is also powered by lithium batteries or by a simple plugging into an outlet. That would probably give it a short leash, though. By the way, remote control is attainable via Bluetooth, which is something that JO-ZERO doesn’t have at this time.
rmo870343-thumb-359x550-30808Okay, now that I’ve got the basic facts out of the way, I can finally talk about that face, or lack thereof. What is that, some sort of mask sample from The Phantom of the Opera musical? Who was playing the role of the Phantom, Howard the Duck?
Or maybe someone intends to make some sort of horror movie where the Remo starts killing everyone. After all, most slasher films boil down to some guy in a mask hacking people to death. You know, like Jason from theFriday the 13th movies, Mike Myers from the Halloween series, or that one guy in the Scream movies.
Well, if someone is planning on making a low-budget robot slasher film, then they had better be willing to pay the $4,358 price for the Remo. They can order it here.

JO-ZERO could be in next Transformers movie, as himself

Have you ever noticed how jerky and clumsy most robots move? I mean, they don’t call that one dance “The Robot” for nothing. This is simply not the case with JO-ZERO (pronounced “Jay-Oh Zero”).
Himeji Softworks wanted to develop a robot that was “stylish, speedy, and human-like” and I believe that they have succeeded. If you don’t believe me, watch the video.
What you are seeing isn’t deleted footage from a Transformers movie, but actual film from the International Robotics Exhibition 2009. I mean, JO-ZERO is really busting a move on the dance floor (presumably a sheet of paper) as well as a battery of other tricks that would make most stiff-necked robots green with envy.
The JO-ZERO has about twenty directions worth of movement (8 for the arms, 10 for the legs, and 2 for the back). So if it gets knocked down, it gets up again.
One of the reasons that the JO-ZERO looks so cool is because it was actually designed by a manga artist Minoru Kamiya, who created the anime show Act On!
The JO-ZERO robot kit has a microcomputer built in so it can be pre-programmed. It can also be controlled via controller (like one from a console video game) or IR remote. Any interested user can purchase the JO-ZERO kit for about $1,300.

Wavebox portable microwave oven

When the microwave oven was first released, it did change the way we live in many aspects. No longer do you need to wait for hours on end for something frozen to thaw, and heating food up takes but a couple of minutes under the high power setting. While there are certain quarters that claim eating microwaved food isn’t exactly the most healthy way to go, who wants to live forever anyways, right? After all, we’re all about convenience these days, and you don’t get any more convenient than popping in a TV dinner into your microwave whenever you’re home grouchy and hungry. Well, looks like the electrical world’s sliced bread has just gotten better with its “butter”, in the form of the Wavebox portable microwave oven.
waveboxThe Wavebox portable microwave oven is pretty self-explanatory – it functions as a microwave oven, albeit you are able to bring this with you just about anywhere you go. We mean that with some common sense, of course, as we wouldn’t expect you to lug this around a shopping mall just because the waffle you bought was not hot enough for you. No sir, the Wavebox will target folks who need to prepare meals away from the kitchen or those who live off-the-grid, which includes campers, boaties and truckies among others. Tipping the scales at 6.3kg, the Wavebox will run off the mains voltage regardless of which country you are in, while you can always hook it up to your vehicle’s 12 volt battery via alligator leads with the option to plug it into your in-vehicle power outlet.
Retailing for $250 a pop, at least you won’t need to go through the hassle of starting a fire in the middle of nowhere while waiting for many minutes before your food is cooked. Just make sure your vehicle’s battery has enough charge left to keep the Wavebox going, otherwise you might end up as food for the grizzlies.

American Scientific Resources, better known as ASR for short, has just announced that they will be rolling out a new range of affordable yet revolutionary, 5-in-1 non-contact thermometers that were specially designed to meet the needs of consumers and healthcare workers globally. Instead of the usual glass-and-mercury combination, these new non-contact thermometers are a snap to use, where it is able to provide instant temperature reading that is accurate as well, while making kids (and some adults) more comfortable since they no longer need to have something probing their orifice – whether it is from the top or at the bottom. Too bad for the little ones, as I clearly remember be paedatrician offering me lollipops after taking my temperature as a form of goodwill.
Some of the advantages for this new thermometer line will include :-

  • Affordability
  • Quick results, enabling immediate care
  • Time saver for large groups
  • Trusted clinical approval for accuracy
  • The ability to take a trauma-free, non-invasive temperature
  • Completely hygienic
  • Back-lit display to be seen in dark when the patient is sleeping

You won’t find these thermometers out so soon as the consumer model will enter production in February next year, with full production capability exceeding 5,000 units per day. As for the new Kidz-Med 5-in-1 Non-Contact consumer model pictured above, it is expected to retail for $49.95 in the US while folks living outside of the US will have to fork out nearly $80.00 instead. Expect the thermometer to be widely available for purchase sometime in Q3 2010. While it is going to be manufactured in China, we hope that there will be sufficient quality control methods employed. What other non-invasive medical advances would you like to see happen in the future?
