Bloxels glow-in-the-dark interactive blocks

Bloxels aren’t just any blocks, but they can change color and glow. Of course, it uses the power of technology to create this luminous and colorful effect.
Think of it as some colorful Legos, and each of the blocks has a transmitter so you can make some beautiful designs. Bloxels are not just some glowing cube, but the Bloxels work by obtaining its color data from the lower level Bloxel. Somehow the data is transmitted through a series of infrared high-speed flickers.
Bloxels are the creation of Jinha Lee, who had a vision of pixels that “escaped the monitor screen and became controllable by people”? I suppose the name Bloxel comes form a combination of the word “block” and “pixel”.
Each Bloxel consists of two full color LEDs for display, nine infrared LEDs for data transmission, a photo detector, battery, and micro controller. As I mentioned before, this is from the creation of Jinha Lee, but there doesn’t seem to be any toy companies in line to purchase this. I suppose that it could be sort of educational, and maybe they could figure out a way to make the blocks in all sorts of building block shapes. Of course, there are a lot of batteries to be sold separately here.

UZI Tactical Defender Pen takes DNA

If you’re worried about keeping yourself safe, finding the right weapon to do that with can be tricky.  Personally, I have some pepper spray I keep on a keychain, but I’ve noticed that guys for the most part don’t want to carry something like that.  However, this pen is discreet and manly enough that it would work out great for either sex.  Not only does this tactical pen manage to injure your attacker, but it also takes a quick sample of their DNA.
stabby-mcfountainpen
Then once you’ve managed to escape and get to a police station you have on hand the attacker’s DNA.  You just have to make sure to pull the pen back out of the wound while you’re getting away.  When you’re not feeling threatened it will work just fine as a normal pen.  The pen is supposed to be going for $20.  You can find out more information on the pen through CampCo.

Sense concept plays with your emotion

We often think that machines are cold and unfeeling devices, making their decisions based on logic and logic alone (those who watched Terminator Salvation ought to be able to relate), which is why we rely on our feelings to churn out more human-like devices, as in the case of CD&I Associates with their Sense concept. The Sense concept is a wireless device which is touted to offer a “more emotional connection between users and experiences” using touch and smell. This would mean users will be able to experience haptic, thermal and olfactory sensations whenever they indulge in games, sit through a movie or even shop online, thanks to a tactile hand sheath and flavor-ink printed output. I’m not too sure about the flavor – would you like to taste your own blood in your mouth after getting pummeled to a pulp by your opponent in Street Fighter IV? How about having a go at Left 4 Dead, only to smell bile and other offending scents which might lead your wife to think you’re secretly harboring a skunk at home.

sense-conceptStill, this concept ought to be commended as CD&I Associates wants to elevate everyday experiences like shopping, gaming and watching media online to a whole new level thanks to their wireless sensory aid. The system, with its tactile, heated sheath will be able to stimulate nerve receptors in the hand that in turn recreates the pressure, temperature, roughness, softness, or hardness properties of an object that is currently being viewed. Of course, there is a whole lot of work to be done here since the developers will need to encode the smell, touch and taste variations of multiple subjects being viewed, which is an extremely tedious task to say the least.
Half a dozen flavor cartridges will feature in the Sense, where it is capable of mimicking basic flavor types including bitterness, sweetness and saltiness among others. They are also toying with the idea of including seven more wax cartridges with micro emanators to reproduce different types of smell. All in all, the Sense concept looks and sounds like something just for the rich – I would much rather spend my money purchasing an ink cartridge for my printer instead of refilling these flavor and wax cartridges. What about you?

Canon X Mark I is green

Just how green is the Canon X Mark I calculator? Well, for starters, it looks very Apple-sque, and is made up from recycled PowerShot lenses – at least where the glass elements are concerned. At $30 a pop, this makes for a very expensive calculator compared to those Made-in-China staples that tend to break down when you need it the most. Well you can tell that plenty of love has gone into its design, where the X Mark I will incorporates curves and designs that are not too far off from the award-winning range of PowerShot Digital cameras. Besides, it is fully solar-powered, helping reduce waste while making it virtually useable anywhere. Pick from either black or white colors.

Light Touch takes virtual interfaces to a colorful level

Light Touch uses a laser driven, interactive holographic display
Man, it seems like years ago that a small company in Israel introduced us to a light projected keyboard interface. If you remember it, it displayed a red keyboard template and the projector was able to determine what key the user was pressing and translate it to text on a screen. This enabled the user to completely get rid of a physical QWERTY keyboard and provide extra space on the desk (which I could use considering I’m using two keyboards at the moment). But Light Blue Optics is taking it to a whole new level with Light Touch, a complete keyboard and display interface which brings computing to just about any surface.

Light Touch can be used on any surface where a computer is needed.Light Touch can be used on any surface where a computer is needed.
The Light Touch system uses a tiny, iPod sized laser projector to project an interactive image onto any surface. In addition to the Qwerty Keyboard, it also display images like a small monitor display. Currently, the technology is WVGA resolution, but the images are auto focusing. The Light Touch is also WiFi and Bluetooth capable with 2GB of on board memory and a microSD slot that supports up to 32GB of additional memory.
Light Touch uses a laser driven, interactive holographic displayNo word on price or availability but the Light Touch will be unveiled this week at CES in Las Vegas, so there will probably be more details forthcoming.

The Human-Powered Light Bulb

Teaching your children about technology is always fun.  Especially since a lot of the time you end up learning things you didn’t know either.  Well this is one way to teach your kids about the possibility of having human powered electronics.  It demonstrates that power and in a much more interesting way than just reading about it in a book.  With this they can make the bulb shine brightly all with their own static electricity.
Just drag your feet across the carpet as you hold onto one of the wires of the bulb.  Then you can see it glow.  If you do it in a fully dark room it’d be easier to see the small bulb light up.  Your body’s static electricity can reach more than 10,000 volts, which makes it possible to light up this neon bulb.  To purchase the bulb it’ll only cost you $4.95,  making it an affordable demonstration of static electricity.

Pocket Radar all set for CES 2010 release

We covered the Pocket Radar in brief earlier last month, and much has happened since then, with the company releasing more details on how the Pocket Radar works. In fact, if you’re heading down to Las Vegas for CES 2010 next week, you might want to check out how the Pocket Radar looks like at their booth, but for those who can’t make it to Sin City, then there is always the alternative of using your imagination through the following description. Nominated as a 2010 Innovations Design and Engineering Award Honoree in the highly competitive personal electronics category, the Pocket Radar will come in a sleek, compact, palm-sized, ultraportable design, where internally it holds a break-through speed radar technology and point-and-shoot functionality to offer users with extremely accurate, real-time speed measurements of moving objects with the touch of a button.
pocket-radarThe use of proprietary digital signal processing algorithms and state-of-the-art intelligent target acquisition techniques help users obtain unprecedented, industry leading accuracy and speed measurement detection regardless of the object. Pocket Radar has set a new standard for performance for the consumer electronics category, where it can be used by both professionals and everyday consumers in a wide range of methods – you can be a coach trying to clock baseball pitch speeds, or an athlete who want to improve your times, and even NASCAR racing fans are able to be more participative by clocking their favorite driver’s speed around the track.
Pocket Radar will rely on a Doppler radar signal detection and processing system that works in tandem with re-engineered microwave and antenna components, helping deliver a similar powerful performance that are currently available via traditional bulky radar guns. Being small enough to fit into a shirt pocket (and hence its name), it is accurate to within 1 mile per hour. Don’t worry about it running out of juice fast either – a set of AAA batteries are good for up to 10,000 speed measurements.

Bullet Space Pen writes underwater

You may have spotted the bullet shaped USB drive that made its way onto the site only a few days ago.  If you decided to pick one up, you’ll need one of these space pens to finish off the set.  It not only looks like a bullet, but it can manage to write under conditions that a normal pen wouldn’t survive.  All of that is thanks to a special cartridge that’s placed in all Fisher pens including this one.
375bulletspacepenThat cartridge was designed to be used in the zero gravity environment while in space.  It can write at absolutely any angle, including upside down and is capable of writing while you’re underwater.  Now if only you could get your notepad to survive underwater.  It can also write on top of grease and oil and when it’s dealing with extreme temperatures.  The specialized thixotropic ink can also write three times longer than if you were using just normal ink.  You can purchase the .375 Caliber Bullet Space Pen for $24.95 from Vat 19.

Keystone Eco Tag Solar Charger

There are all types of solar chargers out there these days.  This one is meant for those of you that are constantly traveling, but it would still work just fine for those that don’t travel at all.  This solar charger actually doubles as a luggage tag, which is why it might be better suited for those that travel.  Of course, you’ll have to find a way to make sure your luggage gets a bit more sunlight than it would normally receive.  Otherwise, this isn’t going to work the greatest.
keysotneecotagYou can either leave it in the sun to make sure it receives the charge it needs, or you could plug it into your USB port and charge it much faster that way.  It’s capable of charging 2 AAA NiMH rechargeable batteries.  It’s a great way to make sure that your smaller electronics keep a charge while you’re on the go.  As of now the luggage tag isn’t out just yet, it’ll be released in February.  At that time you can expect for it to cost you $35 a piece.

If you happen to host plenty of parties over a year, then chances are most of them would be free flowing with booze to keep some guests happy. Coasters are an important part of any party, being a subtle advertising tool if your beer is sponsored, but if you happen to love being in the center of attention always, how about using these Solar Coasters?

Just the thing to liven up drinks outside, these solar coasters collect energy from the sun and use it to illuminate your drink when its dark. Ideal for patios & garden tables these colour-morphing coasters collect solar energy in the light, and light up when you rest your drink on them!
solar-coasterThe colors will morph from one to another from time to time, and it is smart enough to light up automatically whenever you place your poison of choice on top of them. Needless to say, something like this is a bit expensive at £14.95 a pop, but the attention from the masses might be well worth the money.

Art Lebedev’s See-through Semi-truck

Some of you have at least heard of Art Lebedev, the creator of the Optimus Maximus, the keyboard with a screen on every key. Some of you thought that was impractical, and it was quite expensive.
Art Lebedev has now conceived another idea that will probably very expensive to implement, but very useful. It is called the Transparentius, and it is a Harry Potter spell to turn a truck invisible.
Seriously, it actually is a way to put two LCD screens on the back of a semi truck to show what is in front of it. Of course, there would have to be a camera in front of the truck to create this sub-standard invisibility trick.
transparentius-view-thumb-500x332-30515I can see the inspiration for this Transparentius, because we have all been behind a big semi trucks before. They usually move so slow, that we have to pass, but those trucks are massive that we can’t see around them. With these screens on the back, now you see when it is safe to pass.
Of course, those screens have to be pretty expensive, and then there is the camera that it feeds to. It could be an easy target for truck-stop robbers.
Well, this is still a concept for now, so maybe Mr. Levedev can iron out all the kinks of this device soon. Perhaps LCD screens will be really cheap by then.

Wind power and e-vehicles to combat climate change

Most of the world’s eyes are fixed upon the leaders who will congregate at Copenhagen, Denmark from next week onwards with regard to the climate and its change, but while the world leaders are busy discussing on a macro level on methods to save the earth from dying due to over-population and pollution, the working class (that’s us!) need not sit back and do nothing. No sir, we can do our part by spreading the word on various ways to keep the earth green, or if you’re more ambitious, learn more about a real-life project that is currently underway which will utilize renewable wind energy to power electric vehicles. This is currently happening on the small Danish island of Bornholm, where government, academia and industry are working hand-in-hand on an innovative pilot program known as the EDISON Project. The EDISON Project could offer unique technical insights which will go some ways in addressing the challenges of combining renewable energy with EVs.
Edison-ProjectCopenhagen utility DONG Energy is currently collaborating with regional energy company of Oestkraft, the Technical University of Denmark, Siemens, Eurisco and the Danish Energy Association, and IBM to develop the system. Depending on how far consumers allow them to go, current electric vehicles could rely on the system created to charge their exhausted batteries whenever the wind generates excess power. Needless to say, vehicle charging will be slowed or delayed whenever the wind stops, resulting in reduction of energy production. The main goal behind this is not to save the world in the blink of an eye, but to use this as a model for deploying an estimated 200,000 wind-powered EVs nationwide by 2020. Denmark is certainly on the right track as they’re currently a leader in wind power, churning over 20% of the country’s electric power, with the current goal of doubling that amount. Apart from that, they’re not short on expertise as around half the wind turbines produced worldwide hail from Danish manufacturers.

LGs new watch phone is Dick Tracy … and then some

Growing up a fan of Dick Tracy, I longed to have Dick’s cool watch radio phone which enabled him to communicate with headquarters. But in reality, the deployment of such a device has been left “wanting,” mostly do to reception problems due to analog cell systems. But with the advent of digital carriers and broadband highspeed wireless internet, the promise is now hopeful for not only improved cellular audio capability, but video capability as well. And that means, a video watchphone is now a reality. Well, I’m excited.

Knicks Cable Holder Clip

This is one of those simple items that would be great to keep in your laptop case for whenever you happen to need it. After all, there is nothing quite as obnoxious as wanting to unplug your laptop, but still wanting the end of the cord to stay on the table top. Especially since it almost never stays where you want it to, it inevitably falls underneath the table. Then you’re stuck crawling on your hands and knees to find where the cord went. This hook would save you from having to go on that search.

Justin Timberlake’s New Fragrance looks like MP3 Player. Why?

Introducing a unique MP3 player known simply as Play. It is so good that it is backed by former NSYNC member Justin Timberlake. This MP3 has one unique feature, as it comes with its own fragrance that you can apply to your skin.

It also has another unique feature as it does not play MP3s. That’s right, those buttons there is just part of the packaging, and this is really a Givenchy colonge sponsored by the former boy band member himself.

jts-fragrance

So why bottle a cologne like it is an MP3 player? Believe it or not, the answer is not just “because they can”. Apparently it is inspired by “mobile multimedia gadgets, those quintessential objects of modernity and style that have become both everyday objects and icons of our era”.

So what’s next, scents that look like iPhones and BlackBerries? The latter might make interesting packaging for a Gossip Girl perfume, maybe.

Three Dimensional Holographic Head by ICT Graphics Lab

Every once in a while, you have to ask yourself how close we are to an age of Star Warstechnology. Today, I found that the Institute for Creative Technologies (ICT) graphics lab has figured out a way to make holographic communication.

As you can see, there is a holographic head in a box there, very reminiscent of Laddy the genie from Pee-Wee’s Playhouse. Unlike Laddy, the person can view the floating head in three-dimensions. What you don’t see is what is happening to the “head-guy” on the other side.

3dholigram_a2

The head uses special cameras to get the information on the profile, and the project it onto a spinning mirror. Most holograms use lasers, but this uses a rotating mirror so that multiple images can be seen. There is a video of this here if you want to see a better demonstration.
