Bloxels glow-in-the-dark interactive blocks

Bloxels aren’t just any blocks, but they can change color and glow. Of course, it uses the power of technology to create this luminous and colorful effect.
Think of it as some colorful Legos, and each of the blocks has a transmitter so you can make some beautiful designs. Bloxels are not just some glowing cube, but the Bloxels work by obtaining its color data from the lower level Bloxel. Somehow the data is transmitted through a series of infrared high-speed flickers.
Bloxels are the creation of Jinha Lee, who had a vision of pixels that “escaped the monitor screen and became controllable by people”? I suppose the name Bloxel comes form a combination of the word “block” and “pixel”.
Each Bloxel consists of two full color LEDs for display, nine infrared LEDs for data transmission, a photo detector, battery, and micro controller. As I mentioned before, this is from the creation of Jinha Lee, but there doesn’t seem to be any toy companies in line to purchase this. I suppose that it could be sort of educational, and maybe they could figure out a way to make the blocks in all sorts of building block shapes. Of course, there are a lot of batteries to be sold separately here.

Single Handle LED Glass Sink Faucet

LED lights seem to show up in the strangest places, including the faucet for your sink.  This one changes how water pours into the sink.  Instead of your average type of faucet, this pours through a very flat looking piece of glass.  Making washing your hands a miniature light show every single time.  Don’t worry, despite that this sink is quite a bit different from the normal faucet, it isn’t too outrageously priced.
The faucet is said to have an extremely easy installation process, even for those that have no experience installing faucets.  Although these faucets feature LED lights, it doesn’t appear that these change colors at all.  The faucets have proven to never leak thanks to its durable ceramic valves.  You can purchase this Single Handle LED Glass Sink Faucet for $65 a piece from Shop Kami.

Round 2 of Crazy Earphones from Solid Alliance

There’s nothing quite like owning a pair of earphones that make it appear as if you have a mushroom growing out of both ears.  You’re bound to turn heads, but you may cease to turn the heads of the opposite sex in a way that you’d prefer.  Instead of a come hither look, you may begin to receive that social leper look.  However, if you can ignore all of that, you’ll have some of the most unique and hilarious earphones around.
These Crazy Earphones will be released next month.  It appears that it’ll only include four different versions.  There are the mushrooms, the arrow through an apple, a miniature ear and then a katana.  Each one begins one one ear and makes it appear as if it goes through to the next.  Each pair will cost you $22.  Although they’re only being released in Japan, so it may be difficult for those outside Japan.

Angle Tracking and Location at Home System (ATLAS) bimanual rehabilitation glove

Strokes are one of the more serious diseases to strike anyone, and in some cases, it could prove to be fatal. Otherwise, others might get off lightly with a change in diet and lifestyle required, while a handful will suffer from limited movement and some degree of paralysis. Apart from getting the proper medical treatment and love from the rest of friends and family, rehabilitation is also important if one wants to regain some semblance of motor functions. The Angle Tracking and Location at Home System (ATLAS) bimanual rehabilitation glove was developed by students at Northeastern University, where it supposedly helps post-stroke patients recover their motor skills. This is made possible thanks to integrated sensors in the ATLAS system alongside a feedback mechanism which interfaces with a computer to allow hand training at home.
This is one ATLAS that might not enhance your geographical knowledge, but it will definitely be a boon to those who can’t drive to the location themselves to receive proper physical therapy or find it just too expensive. At least you can rehabilitate yourself in the comfort of your own home, where a series of sensors within the ATLAS offers resistance in hand exercises. Virtual reality games are displayed on a computer which is synchronized to the glove, making the entire rehab experience all the more fun minus any drab.

atlas
We’re hoping that the final product would be a low-cost virtual-environment based glove system which can be utilized by all and sundry to be used for motor retraining of the arm, hand, fingers and thumb in patients. Of course, where low-cost is mentioned here, it more or less applies to developed nations, where those living in emerging countries might find it a whole lot more expensive due to their lower purchasing power. No pun intended, but if this were to be released, it would win the other rehab options hands down.

Leather Boots with reversible cleats

Thanks to living in a community where a lot of what I need is very nearby, I do a lot of walking instead of driving.  Now that it’s wintertime I’ve found myself about falling flat on my rear on an extremely regular basis.  However, I don’t like having to change out boots when I want to walk indoors.  Which is where these Reversible Cleats Leather Boots would come in extremely handy.
bootsSure, they’re not the most hi-tech solution, but even the simplest of devices can make life far easier.  Unfortunately, it appears that these only come in guy sizes, so the ladies are a little out of luck.  That is unless they have feet big enough to fit into a men’s size 7-13.  The boots work just like you would guess, there are two sets of studs that can be flipped to give you a better grip on the ground you’re walking on.  They are lined with wool and have removable felt insoles.  You can purchase a pair for $199.95 through Hammacher Schlemmer.

mPower Emergency Illuminator

To say that the mPower Emergency Illuminator is a flashlight is like saying a Rolex is a watch. Granted, it is a true statement, but this mPower Emergency Illuminator is like the flashlight of the gods.
Well, it was designed by the car gods, and, by that, I mean, Porsche. Porsche Design Studio equipped the mPower with two widely available CR 123 3 volt lithium batteries. But what makes this flashlight the tops is it also includes a “groundbreaking reserve lithium battery with a shelf life of at least 20 years”.
mpower-flaslightThat’s right, a shelf life of 20 years. I have no idea how long of an actual shine you would have with this, but dang, that’s 20 years! Gilligan and his friends could have used this. By the way, he could have charged some electronic devices like mobile phones, since the device has an accessory USB connection. Maybe that’s how the castaways of Gilligan’s Island listened to that radio all those years. Am I the only one who ever noticed that the batteries of this portable radio never wore out?
But enough references to old sixties shows, you should be able to get the mPower Emergency Illuminator in Titanium Satin and Black Chrome for about $289.00 in March 2010. You can read more about the mPower Emergency Illuminator here. I had a chance to handle it at CES Unveiled, and it was sleek.

Pure Oasis Flow Radio works in the great outdoors

I have managed to see my fair share of radios with a retro twist and plenty of radios made for the outdoors, but I don’t believe I’ve ever seen one that actually combines the two.  This Pure Oasis Flow does exactly that, it shows off great style while actually being capable of dealing with the weather outdoors.  It also looks small enough that it would be a great sized radio to take with you to the beach.
6a00d83451cbb069e2012876b9b726970c-800wiThe radio is actually splash resistant thanks to the case, plus the rugged case is weatherproof as well.  It has cast aluminum framework and rubber seals to finish off the deal.  As far as the electronic portion goes it has internet radio, podcasts, PURE sounds and music streaming anywhere that you have a Wi-Fi connection.  Plus it has your normal FM radio reception.  As far as keeping it powered goes, the radio has a built-in rechargeable ChargePAK battery.  You can’t purchase it just yet though, it’ll be released sometime in the first half of 2010.  Sometime closer to the release date they’ll probably release the pricing information.

UZI Tactical Defender Pen takes DNA

If you’re worried about keeping yourself safe, finding the right weapon to do that with can be tricky.  Personally, I have some pepper spray I keep on a keychain, but I’ve noticed that guys for the most part don’t want to carry something like that.  However, this pen is discreet and manly enough that it would work out great for either sex.  Not only does this tactical pen manage to injure your attacker, but it also takes a quick sample of their DNA.
stabby-mcfountainpen
Then once you’ve managed to escape and get to a police station you have on hand the attacker’s DNA.  You just have to make sure to pull the pen back out of the wound while you’re getting away.  When you’re not feeling threatened it will work just fine as a normal pen.  The pen is supposed to be going for $20.  You can find out more information on the pen through CampCo.

Phonograph 218 Clock Radio

Usually my tastes for retro gadgets knows no bounds.  However, I think this bit of technology is a bit much even for me.  However, if you like your devices to be incredibly unique, then you’ll love this Phonograph.  If nothing else, it is most definitely unique.  Plus, it appears to have modern conveniences, such as a clock to wake up with every morning.
You also have the bonus that it quite obviously has a lamp built into it, which is probably the most strange part of the device.  It’d look almost normal were it not for that lamp popping out of the top of the clock.  It seems to have a radio as well that goes with it.  Unfortunately the details on the device are somewhat limited.  Besides that it has an output power of 3W and was created in Guangdong, China.  You can go to the product page and contact the creator to find out how to get your hands on one of these.  They don’t actually list the price though.

Battery-Powered Heated Lumbar Office Chair

The weather is a whole lot colder for a great deal of us.  If you’re having a hard time staying warm this year, this seat manages to heat things up from underneath of you.  With this you could complete your set of heated items.  It’s not enough to have a heated mouse and keyboard, you have to finish it off with a Heated Lumbar Office Chair.
cordless-heated-office-chair
There are only two different temperature settings, but at least both will keep you nice and warm.  One of the best parts of this office chair is that it’s powered by a rechargeable battery.  That means that while you’re rolling around you won’t have a cord to worry about rolling over.  It comes stuffed with memory foam and is designed to relieve those pressure points.  You can purchase the leather chair for the slightly expensive price of $799.95 from Hammacher and Schlemmer.

Ultrasonic Voice Recorder Dog Trainer

Training dogs isn’t always easy, some dogs are easier than others.  However, either way it takes a great deal of work and dedication to accomplish anything with your pet.  With this device, hopefully you can make the training process a little more smooth for you.  This voice recorder was created in hopes that it would reinforce all that effort you put into training.  It uses both your own voice commands, as well as the option to use high frequency tones.
Digital-Ultrasonic-dog-trainer-450x216
The tones can of course only be heard by your dog.  Whereas the voice recordings are just normal recordings of your commands.  It’d make things easier for other members of your family if the dog only listens to you.  With this they could get the dog to quit jumping all over them by pressing a button.  Whether or not it actually works is unknown, but it could be worth testing out.  You can purchase it for $27.69 from UX Sight.

XV-11 robo-vacuum

The RPS Technology gives the XV-11 a 360-degree of the room, and then it learns a cleaning process with SLAM (simultaneous localization and mapping) in order to find the best and most efficient path to clean for the user.
Once it has finished cleaning, the XV-11 will automatically return to its original charger base, so it can recharge itself for when it will be used again. The user can program it with the cleaning scheduler program to make certain the XV-11 cleans once a day, if he or she likes.
They had the XV-11 on display at Pepcom, a huge press event that takes place before the main conference at CES. It seemed to make a piece of carpet look like new, and it left some interesting swirling pattern.
The Neato Robotics XV-11 should be available for purchase around February 4 for a price of $399.

Wireless PC Remote with built-in motion sensor

The Wii very quickly became the gaming console of choice for a great deal of people that would never consider themselves to be gamers.  Along with the console came a whole lot of almost pointless accessories for people to buy.  Sure, there were on occasion a few useful items, but a lot of them were just to make a quick buck off of not so well informed newcomers to gaming.  This leans a little towards the pointless gadgets, but it could actually be justified.  Especially if you’ve started to enjoy the feel of the Wiimote.
motionPCRemoteIt’s just an electronic device to work with your PC, bringing the Wii feel to your computer.  It’s pitched towards those that do PowerPoint presentations on a regular basis.  It works just like a normal mouse, but it also has some additional button controls, as well as motion activated page switching.  Although it is definitely a novelty device, it would be comfortable to use for presentations.  To pick one up you can find these on Chinavasion for$40.72.

Flexible Mini Capsule Microphone for iPhone 3GS

So you’ve gotten yourself a brand new iPhone 3GS and think that it is the bee’s knees – well here’s news for you. It isn’t exactly the best device out there, as there still isn’t anything which can do everything well, and the iPhone 3GS is no exception. One of its major weaknesses would be less-than-satisfactory sound quality when recording, which is why the new Flexible Mini Capsule Microphonefrom Brando was introduced – it is highly flexible, allowing you to point the microphone on its swiveling base to receive sound from any direction, and doing so with a 25+ dB gain for enhanced sound clarity and quality. Compatible with the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, iPhone 2G and iPod Nano 4G, you will be able to pick up this nifty device for $14.

Sense concept plays with your emotion

We often think that machines are cold and unfeeling devices, making their decisions based on logic and logic alone (those who watched Terminator Salvation ought to be able to relate), which is why we rely on our feelings to churn out more human-like devices, as in the case of CD&I Associates with their Sense concept. The Sense concept is a wireless device which is touted to offer a “more emotional connection between users and experiences” using touch and smell. This would mean users will be able to experience haptic, thermal and olfactory sensations whenever they indulge in games, sit through a movie or even shop online, thanks to a tactile hand sheath and flavor-ink printed output. I’m not too sure about the flavor – would you like to taste your own blood in your mouth after getting pummeled to a pulp by your opponent in Street Fighter IV? How about having a go at Left 4 Dead, only to smell bile and other offending scents which might lead your wife to think you’re secretly harboring a skunk at home.

sense-conceptStill, this concept ought to be commended as CD&I Associates wants to elevate everyday experiences like shopping, gaming and watching media online to a whole new level thanks to their wireless sensory aid. The system, with its tactile, heated sheath will be able to stimulate nerve receptors in the hand that in turn recreates the pressure, temperature, roughness, softness, or hardness properties of an object that is currently being viewed. Of course, there is a whole lot of work to be done here since the developers will need to encode the smell, touch and taste variations of multiple subjects being viewed, which is an extremely tedious task to say the least.
Half a dozen flavor cartridges will feature in the Sense, where it is capable of mimicking basic flavor types including bitterness, sweetness and saltiness among others. They are also toying with the idea of including seven more wax cartridges with micro emanators to reproduce different types of smell. All in all, the Sense concept looks and sounds like something just for the rich – I would much rather spend my money purchasing an ink cartridge for my printer instead of refilling these flavor and wax cartridges. What about you?

LG to introduce mobile DTV in US

South Korean companies have certainly come a long way since they first started off on wobbly ground, and boy are they conquering the global market in many industries. Their automakers, Hyundai and Kia are even able to give the Japanese companies a run for their yen, and Samsung and LG are already global players where consumer electronics are concerned. We’ll be taking a closer look at the latter today, with LG Electronics having the honor of introducing the industry’s first portable, battery-operated mobile DTV Stateside, where it was specially designed to receive new rugged over-the-air signals being transmitted by local broadcasters. The future for mobile DTV looks bright as hundreds of stations are expected to sign on the air this year in order to cater for portable TV reception demand that is currently on the uptrend.
lg-mobile-tvOfficially known as the DP570MH Mobile Digital Television with DVD Playback, it will be formally introduced to the masses at CES 2010 later this week. According to Tim Alessi, director of product development, LG Electronics USA, “It’s easy to receive Mobile DTV broadcasts with LG’s new Mobile Digital Television set, which comes equipped with a built-in antenna and the ability to play DVD and CD discs. Even on a fast-moving train, a viewer should expect robust reception from favorite local channels – unlike some small digital TV sets currently on the market.”
Capable of receiving mobile DTV on demand virtually anywhere and at any speed, the DP570MH Mobile Digital Television ensures you don’t miss a TV moment regardless of where you are. Other features include stereo speakers and a 7″ widescreen display at WQVGA resolution of 480 x 234, where the LG Mobile Digital TV was designed in such a manner that you are able to tilt its display screen to your preferred angle so as not to strain those eyes of yours during lengthy shows. Placing it in your bag is a snap – just fold down the clamshell-style screen and it will transform into a manageable 9.5″ x 6.5″ device. Other abilities include audio, photo and video playback, USB 2.0 connectivity and an integrated DVD player. Expect the DP570MH Portable Television to hit the market later this year for $249.

Samsung releases new range of netbooks

Samsung is not going to let the opportunity to introduce new netbooks pass by, not when they are trying to press their advantage to reach the summit in that department worldwide. This has prompted the consumer electronics giant to come up with a wide range of netbooks that are sure to captivate your heart (one model at the very least, of course), in the form of the Samsung N210, N220, N150 and NB30. Specially designed to provide maximum personal freedom, the N210 and N220 are capable of functioning for up to 12 hours of secure connected mobility before requiring a trip to the nearest power outlet, while the N150 is less energetic with an 8.5 hour battery life. As for the NB30, this model is able to go for 11 hours before zoning out. How did Samsung manage to introduce such impressive battery-powered performance? We believe it has something to do with the use of Intel’s latest Pine Trail Atom N450 processor alongside a more energy efficient LED display and Samsung’s proprietary Enhanced Battery Life solution.

samsung-new-netbooksApart from their superior battery life, the N210, N220, N150 and NB30 also come with a range of display features which will enhance the visual experience, thanks to their new 10.1″ LED anti-reflective display that will fine-tune both movies and images to deliver the sharpest details and boldest colors possible without straining your eyes. In addition, you won’t experience the pesky mirror effect under bright lights or in sunny weather, which goes to say a whole lot. With the use of its integrated Easy Resolution Manager tool, changing the screen resolution to suit the ocassion is a snap, while holding video conferences and calls are easily done thanks to its built-in Digital LiveCam.
Another nice touch that Samsung has included would be its mark and scratch-resistant durable casing which prolongs the aesthetic life of your netbook, perhaps making it easier to sell on eBay or other auction sites once you no longer have any more use for it. You precious data within the hard drive remains safer as well compared to conventional netbooks courtesy of its hard disk drive freefall sensor that will park the hard drive automatically whenever the netbook drops. Interestingly enough, Samsung knows that accidents involving fluids around netbooks are prone to happen, which is why they included a water-tight seal around the system to prevent potential damage from contact with up to 50 cc of spilled water if removed within 10 seconds – best to keep a roll of tissues with you at all times then.

Samsung NX10 digital camera announced

Samsung attemps to light up CES 2010 with another digital camera offering in the form of the NX10, where despite coming in a sleek and compact body, it is able to offer users optimum image quality to help you capture creative shots without any compromise in portability. Being this effective is made possible thanks to a fast and decisive auto focus (AF), 14.6-megapixel APS-C size CMOS sensor and a special, large 3.0” AMOLED screen, enabling avid shutterbugs to view their images easily despite being under bright sunlight. Sometimes, however, photos don’t tell the whole story (or have a thousand word limit according to tradition), which is why video recording comes in handy as well, with the NX10 being full well capable of handling HD movie recording without missing a beat.
samsung-nx10
Boasting one of the fastest AF in its class on the market, this claim is made possible courtesy of Samsung’s new DRIMe II Pro engine and advanced AF algorithm. Basically, the Samsung NX10 might look like a standard digital camera on the outside, but within it lies the heart of a DSLR, thanks to a successful integration of the APS-C size CMOS sensor with a mirrorless interchangeable lens which results in a sleek, lightweight camera that can be carried around anywhere and everywhere without spraining that shoulder of yours. All HD movie recording will be performed in the H.264 codec for a wider range of playback compatibility.
Other features available on the Samsung NX10 aim to help you be a better shutterbug thanks to its integrated technology, featuring in-depth manual controls, a Smart Auto function that is capable of selecting the best shooting mode, a Smart Range feature which lets you express bright and dark areas simultaneously within the same frame, and a Supersonic Dust Reduction system that prevents dust particles from impairing the image.

Kyocera offers Laylo and Domino phones

Kyocera isn’t exactly one of the larger players in the cellphone arena, and their offerings fail to impress the masses most of the time, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t a honest, hardworking company. Well, perhaps the tide might turn in their favor with the announcement of two new cellphone launches – the Kyocera Laylo and Domino phones which will be available from MetroPCS, making it to retail stores just in time for the holiday season to show off to your family members and friends that you have finally decided to ditch that monochrome display handset without a digital camera built in.
The Laylo will come in a slider format, boasting an eye-catching red color with a soft-touch finish and a reflective twist. A quick slide downwards will open to reveal a hidden vanity mirror, which more or less places this in the domain of the ladies. Know of any guys who would want to carry a vanity mirror with them wherever they go? Well, the Domino will take on a candybar form factor instead, where it will also sport the Yuletide color of red while offering features that are a notch above other handsets of similar price levels.
laylo-dominoA further search showed that the Laylo comes with a 2.2″ contoured high-resolution display and a 1.3 megapixel camera apart from the aforementioned discrete vanity mirror. You get a relatively generous keypad within with excellent tactile and visual separation of the keys for faster, easier typing. Other features include Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity, a WAP 2.0 browser, BREW 3.1.5 and a paperless user guide to get new users started while saving some trees in the process. The Domino, on the other hand, also comes with a large display with legible and large fonts. Other features like Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity, a WAP 2.0 browser and BREW 3.1.5 are alsow thrown in to offer more bang for your buck.
Any takers for a new phone this holiday season?
