Robot Fish Being Developed by MIT

I finally got a chance to see thatG.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra last night, and I have to admit that it wasn’t all that. However, there was a scene that inspired this article as it contained a robotic fish.

I’m sure that if MIT engineers Kamal Youcef-Toumi and Pablo Valdivia Y Alvarado were watching this movie, they would probably say: “hey, they stole our technology”.

These two engineers designed their robo-fish to monitor pipelines, sunken ships, and pollution. Just think of them as miniature versions of those underwater probing robots that you saw in Titanic. Only it doesn’t look like that these grab on to anything.

It also doesn’t look like they can go too deep. Underwater pressures would probably take them out before they could find the Heart of the Ocean.

Concept PC is Laptop or Tablet

Every once in a while, you see some product that feels like it could start a revolution. Case in point, this conceptual laptop by designer Victor Bivol.

As you can see from the video after the jump, the purpose of this device is to open up the keyboard just like you would the laptop itself. Then you can give that keyboard a spin and it becomes a tablet like the cool ones at Wac

Magnetic Propelled Cars: Our traffic saviors?

Last week, we covered a story about driverless taxis at Heathrow Airport, and it would appear that someone else is working on a driverless vehicle system with the Induction Powered Vehicle (IPV).

This concept vehicle is designed by Phillipp Siebourg, and it is not designed for the average consumer, but for vehicles that can’t afford to be stopped by traffic. It uses a magnetic track to guide the vehicle, which can be controlled by a cellular phone.

Hangman Light for those tired of it all

If you have no problem with slightly morbid designs, this light would work great for your home. It looks about like a doll has decided to finally end their poor tortured life. Only to be turned into a lamp to illuminate your home with their dark deed. It’s not morbid in the least. Hopefully your friends and family share your open mind as far as cryptic items go, otherwise you might find fewer and fewer people stopping by to hang out.

YikeBike is one swell way to get around town

I love how innovative inventors are always challenging themselves to think of better and more fun ways of getting around town. Remember the eniCycle? Now enter the YikeBike.

By the way, see those handlebars in front? That is actually the seat of this 1.2 kilowatt electric motor powered carbon fiber foldable bike.

Yes, it is foldable. It only takes up 6 x 23.6 x 23.6 inches and weighs 22 pounds (10 kilograms). What is really interesting is it only takes 15 seconds to fold up.

Bluetooth Concept turns your finger phone into reality

For those of you who are sick of the convenience of Bluetooth earpieces and want to live your dream of talking to your fingers like pretend phone from your childhood should look into this concept device.
Designed by BCK, a team from Argentina, its a very simple concept. The user talks to the hand using the yellow ring that fits halfway down the little finger, and then listens with the pink ring on the thumb. (Why is the thumb look like its been drawn on the picture?)
This is one concept that probably won’t catch on, ever. Unless you can make a display to put on the palm. Maybe there is some alternate reality where this technology came into fruition. Enjoy this poem after the jump.

KDDI presents the iida Polaris cellphone robot

When I first saw the iida Polaris from KDDI, I thought the idea was to put your cellular phone in a ball like a hamster so it is free to roam about the room. Of course, that is kind of silly, isn’t it? It’s not like your phone is a living thing that wants to explore.
Of course, we live in a technological age where designers often make things simply because they can, and I was actually willing to believe that rolling is what the iida Polaris does. Sadly, my dreams of a cell phone hamster ball mechanism were shattered as I discovered that the ball apparatus only serves as a cradle, not a transport.
When the user puts the phone in the cradle, it begins a process of collecting data such as healthy food suggestions, business news updates, and weather information. The user can open the fancy lid on the Polaris and use the phone as a remote control in order to access their television.plris00000kddi0023-thumb-550x430-23722Review on the latest all gadgets , PC or computer hardwares, notebooks, netbooks, accessories, gadgets, mobile phones and video game consoles on the market

Xbox 360 Controller from Carl Archambeault

I’m not certain if you can read the small print on the photo to the left, but it says “Project was to design a handheld gaming device that would combine the gaming power of the Xbox 360 and the music and video power of the Microsoft Zune”.
264513_YizGpvXPJwLjNxsfCkpxEMDHqThis was the vision of Carl Archambeault when he designed this controller with a slide out screen. This Xbox 1080 is a prototype that has a slide-out LCD screen. I am assuming that you get 1080 quality, but doesn’t the Zune HD have only 720p? Oh, wait, maybe it is called that because it is three times better than that pesky Xbox 360.
I believe that the purpose of this is to be some new type of portable video gaming system, but I thought this was some homage to the Sega Dreamcast, that system that celebrated its 10th anniversary yesterday.

Solar Power from Human Hair?

One of the problems with getting energy in developing countries is where to get it from. Some have resorted to silicon solar panels, but Milan Karki has found a simpler form of solar power that uses human hair instead of silicon.
solar-hairThat’s right, I said human hair. Renewable energy is possible with something that everyone but Lex Luthor has. The secret is in Melanin, the pigment in hair that makes color, and its electrical conductive qualities are the secret to hair solar power.

Magnet Clock helps you keep track of your day

Everyone has things that they enjoy putting on the fridge.  Be it school pictures or just random funny magnets, we all have our preferences.  Well with this you could even have a clock on your fridge that you can map out your day with.  It doesn’t itemize every little thing, but it does have little stick figure men that will illustrate each task you have ahead of you.  It does so in such a humorous way that even the most obnoxious tasks will give you a little laugh.

Petcare Robot: Play with your pet from a distance

The first time I saw this picture, I thought someone took an alien head and mounted it on the body of a UFO. In reality, this is the PetCare robot, a mobile webcam that allows you to monitor your pet from a distance.
I know when I leave my dog alone for a while, I would feel better if he was occupied by playing with this toy rather than chewing up my garbage. This is assuming that I have nothing better to do on my vacation than operate this toy on the Internet.
Not only is this camera/toy mobile by remote control through the Internet, but the ball that it bears is also remote control as well. In fact, the ball can be charged in the mobile camera itself. I’m not certain how the robot can be charged, or if it can be charged from a distance.

Guitar Hero, without the console?

Yesterday, I reported on the Domyos Interactive System, an exercise video game that doesn’t require a specific console to play. Now it would appear that music video games may soon be played sans console as well.
Recently, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick announced that “you should expect to see many of our products to be playable on the television independent of a console”.
Well, we all know what Activision makes, besides those really cool Atari 2600 games like Pitfall and Starmaster in the eighties. They are the big cheese behind Guitar Hero!
Surely they could make a Guitar Hero game that would plug right into the television itself, and would play the game based on the memory inside of it.

Bloodbot combines your worst vampire and robot fears

There are a lot of people who faint at the sight of a needle, as well as those that swoon at the sight of blood.
Wouldn’t it be great if there was some machine like this Bloodbot that could draw your blood, without a human ever being present?
Some of you might faint at the very idea of that, but haven’t you ever had a doctor who had a hard time finding the vein while you were donating blood? Apparently, this bloodbot has an accuracy rate of seventy-eight percent. Normally, I would say that is good, but I would like to see the average accuracy rate for a doctor.

Punch Camera responds to senseless beatings

Now here’s a camera that is way better than any of the other types of cameras that give you instant pictures.  Polaroids are cool and all and digitals are convenient, but this tops them all.  With this you get your pictures instantly, plus you get to let out all that pent up aggression.  No more just holding it all back and pretending to be chipper all the time.  Now you have a valid excuse to beat the snot out of something.

In order to get the image that you have just captured on the camera, you’ll have to pound it out.  This is of course tragically just a concept design.  Otherwise, I imagine there would be a lot more stress-free individuals in this world.  The designer didn’t exactly have that goal in mind though, they were more worried about tangible memories.  You know connecting both physical and digital while minimizing materials.  Personally, I just like that you get to thump on it.

Nissan’s EPORO robot cars won’t have accidents

My source called these EPORO robot cars, but I don’t know if I feel comfortable calling these things cars. Unless these are cars from some alternate universe where penguins rule the world.
Yes, they may not look like what Nissan usually rolls off the assembly line, but the EPORO robot cars are an advancement for the day when cars drive themselves like Knight Rider.
You see, these EPORO robot cars are able to move in groups, and have software built in that keeps them from crashing into each other. Just think of them as bumper cars without the humans and without the bumps.
I suppose a better comparison would be to schools of fish, who are able to travel without bumping into each other and fluidly avoid other obstacles.
It sort of reminds me of the software used in Pixar’s classic Finding Nemo. Remember how the schools of fish traveled in schools, just like real fish? It would appear that Nissan took that tech a step higher, and plans to put six of the EPORO robots on display at CEATAC Japan next week.
I like where EPORO technology is going. I suppose automated cars could easily be programmed to follow traffic signals, but Nissan has finally figured out how to keep automated vehicles from hitting each other.
Are we that far away from Minority Report style automatic vehicles? I hope not. I would like to take nap in my car while on the way home.

Rescue Stick is a compact way to save lives

It seems like our friends at Yanko Design are always thinking of new ways to make things better. And this time, they’re looking for more compact method to keep store life saving materials so anyone on a sinking ship has a better chance at survival. Enter the Rescue Stick.

The Rescue Stick is a baton shaped container which is tied together by specially designed strings which dissolve upon entering the water to automatically release a horseshoe shaped life float. Should the baton strings fail to dissolve, the tube can be extracted and inflated manually as well.
The rate of inflation is lightening quick thanks to the chemical reaction which can fill the tube with gas in anywhere from .5-4 seconds depending on which chemical compound is used inside. More likely, however, the tube will include a compress CO2 gas cartridge which will blast inflate the tube in the same amount of time.

Another advantage of the rescue stick design is that of natural disasters, where Coast Guard and Navy choppers can air drop hundreds to survivors until they can get fished out of the water.
But while the design is compact and great for storage until needed, even the designers admit that at this stage, the per unit cost of manufacturing such a design may make the Rescue Stick cost prohibitive. But they’re working on improving that.
Meanwhile, the concept represents solid, out of the box thinking on how technology and design can create solutions that can save lives when the worst case scenario rears it’s ugly head.
How the Rescue Stick works ...
