Hexbugs Micro Robotic Creatures: Newest Toy Sensation?

While I was at Radio Shack the other day, I saw two things that caught my attention. The first was the sign out front was not changed to “The Shack”, even though they officially changed their name to that about a month ago. The two guys working there didn’t seem to know if or when that sign would be changed either.

I also got a chance to see an interesting toy that I’m surprised I haven’t seen advertised during Spongebob Squarepants.

Star Wars game Plugs and Plays

I never did understand a lot of these plug and play games that are available in toy departments? I mean, does the world really need a Spongebob game that uses his nose as a joystick?

Perhaps we should ask whether we need the Star Wars 5-in-1 Plug n Play TV Game, that uses the Millennium Falcon as a base. Sadly, the joystick protrudes in a very non-elegant fashion, unlike Spongebob’s nose.

The 5-in-1 in the product’s name refers to the 5 games based on Episodes 1, 2, and 3, the not-so

better half of the Star Wars sexology. (That’s a group of six movies, you perverts.) The games are called names like Coruscsant Attack, Droid Invasion, Grievous Onslaught, Gunship Battle, and Utapau Attack.

Of course, you will need 4 AA batteries to keep the action going and you’ll need access to your AV RCA ports on your TV to get it working in the first place.

Hyper Blast from Wild Planet

It really is impossible to talk about Hyper Blast without talking about 1-2-3 Stomp. These two games are made by Wild Planet, and they have the same basic concept.

Each one comes with a talking base, powered by 3 AAA batteries (not included). At the base’s command, the player stomps on the center, and stuff goes flying. In the case of 1-2-3 Stomp, it was numbers that had to be put back in the proper place. In the case of Hyper Blast, it is numbered balls that also have to be put back in the proper place. You can’t see from the picture here, but each of the HyperBlast balls has a hole in the back so that it will only fit in its proper numerical order.

Petcare Robot: Play with your pet from a distance

The first time I saw this picture, I thought someone took an alien head and mounted it on the body of a UFO. In reality, this is the PetCare robot, a mobile webcam that allows you to monitor your pet from a distance.
I know when I leave my dog alone for a while, I would feel better if he was occupied by playing with this toy rather than chewing up my garbage. This is assuming that I have nothing better to do on my vacation than operate this toy on the Internet.
Not only is this camera/toy mobile by remote control through the Internet, but the ball that it bears is also remote control as well. In fact, the ball can be charged in the mobile camera itself. I’m not certain how the robot can be charged, or if it can be charged from a distance.

Two New Lego Gadgets use Mini-Figs

There are always too many Lego-related products on the market these days, and it and would appear that two mini-figurine (mini-fig) related ones are making the news today.

The first looks like it is an official Lego product, a Lego LED Lantern. The 8.8 inch tall Lego mini-fig hangs from a handle and can swing from there. It uses four white LED lights, and is powered by four AA batteries.

The second are not official Lego products, but they really ought to be. These are flash drives shaped like mini-figs, and some of them are Star Wars characters like Darth Vader, Yoda, or an Imperial Stormtrooper. They also have some that are shaped like other Lego mini-figs like Spongebob Squarepants and even some bricks. Unlike the Lego Lantern, they come in all shapes and sizes, not to mention memory.

If you want either of these products, you’ll have to go to separate places. The first is on the Perpetual Kid site for $19.99. The other is on the Etsy site at varying prices based on memory. The 2GB is for $45.95, the 4GB is for $69.95, and 4GB high speed for $79.95. There is even a 16GB version for $99.95.

So this begs the question: what other Lego mini-fig products can possibly be made? Lego officially has keychains, but I’m looking forward to the mini-fig cellular phones, GPS devices, and PMPs. This is assuming they don’t have them already.

LEGO of my Clock Radio!

It seems like every week at Coolest Gadgets we cover some sort of Lego-based gadget. Last week, it was the Lego Wind up Dynamo Torch. This week, it is this Lego Alarm Clock.

As you can see, there is very little Lego in the Lego Alarm Clock, but, in its defense, it does look like a 2 x 1 brick. I’ve seen other products that were an homage to the name of Lego, but most of them were not endorsed by the giant Danish toy company. The Lego Alarm Clock has Lego written all over it, on every single bumpy part, or “stud”.

Speaking of studs, those two on top don’t look like they would fit into any Legos that I have ever owned, and this includes the Duplo and Quatro collection. No, the purpose of those two knobs is to be knobs for adjusting the volume and tuning of the radio.

Too bad the top of the Lego Alarm Clock isn’t a baseplate. Then the user could put some of his or her best Lego creations atop this guy. As it is, I believe that the Lego Alarm Clock is some accessory designed for some kid’s room, just in time for back to school sales.

If you don’t believe me, then go to your nearest Wal-Mart and you’ll probably find it in the same aisle with the matching sheets, towels, and bedcovers. If you like it, be prepared to spend about $29.97 for it.
